I'm very fascinated with my dreams and what they mean. I constantly find myself attempting to lucid dream and find it comes more naturally when I don't try as hard, and if you think about it most things in life are like this.
Lucid dreaming or a lucid dream is when the dreamer is fully aware that he or she is dreaming. This fascinates me immensely and I would even consider it a super power, due to the fact many people are not capable without practice. It is easy to train your brain how to lucid dream and I personally do not practice it but have researched so many ways to accomplish a lucid dream.
Now I would first like to state I am by all means not an expert on how the mind works and lucid dreaming, I am just a curious mind that knows a lot of information on this little trick. Lucid dreaming is a fantastic phenomenon that happens in our dreams while we sleep. Your conscious and your subconscious mix to the point you are aware you are dreaming.
For most people lucid dreaming can be scary. Knowing you are dreaming but not being able to control what is happening in your dream can be very frightening if you really think about it. Lucid dreaming mostly occurs during the rem cycle, which is the deepest phase of sleep. Lucid dreaming has been present for a long time. Even Aristotle, the father of philosophy once stated, "when one is asleep there is something in consciousness that tells us what is presenting itself in that moment, is only a dream."
Lucid dreaming is very simple to do if one takes the time to practice and learn. There are simple step by step techniques, it is simply "hacking your brain." This wake induced lucid dreaming method or the wild technique is an easy way to teach yourself to lucid dream.
Before you practice this method I would recommend keeping a dream journal. I keep one close by my bed or sometimes even type my dreams out in the notes app in my phone. It is fascinating to look back on your past dreams. We tend to forget what happens in our dreams so I write my dreams down in the morning as soon as I wake up, when they are fresh in memory.
The next step is to create a counter, something you do to remind yourself when you are awake and when you are lucid. For example using your fingers to count to ten. The third step can get very annoying to a person that likes their sleep, the next step requires you to set an alarm for every 4-5 hours. Every time that alarm goes off don't get frustrated or excited by it, simply turn it off and relax but do not go back to sleep.
Close your eyes, lay there and focus on your breathing, reassure your self that you are going to go lucid. Try to stay still as much as possible. When falling back asleep your body does certain things to affirm that you are relaxed, for example roll over or scratch your head, little things like that. You have to try to avoid doing these things and stay still. Your job is try to keep conscious this whole time.
This may sound strange but try to keep all of your focus on the fact that you are awake while you conscious is feeling the need to go back to sleep. This is the trickiest part. At this point you may see colors or images, again this is just your brain trying to fall back into that sleep cycle, but you have to let these fade and not focus on them. Continue to let these images flow because at some point one will clear up in a sense and you will realize you are in a dream state.
What ever dream you have you don't exactly get to choose you are just a part of it, and consciously know that you are in a dream. Some people might ask themselves, "is lucid dreaming dangerous?" Many new experiences can make a person uneasy especially when it has to do with ones mind. To answer your question, no, lucid dreaming is not dangerous. One must also understand that you can not lucid dream every night if you attempted too, it's not healthy. We as humans need to sleep our body needs that rem state, or the deepest part of sleep.
Attempting to Lucid dream every night does put a strain on your body. Lucid dreaming every night can also cause dissociation. When remembering things from the past one who practices lucid dreaming a lot can sometimes dissociate memories with their dreams. This method of lucid dreaming the wild method is the most affective and popular, I recommend everyone try it at some point in their life as it is a crazy experience that may change the way you think about your dreams.
