Loyola University Maryland: The Stages Of 'Jonas' Cabin Fever

Loyola University Maryland: The Stages Of 'Jonas' Cabin Fever

This past week, Baltimore got hit with 30+ inches of snow, thanks to winter blizzard Jonas. Loyola University Maryland was closed for a total of five and a half days, three and half of which were school days. The snow days were fun, and I am in no way complaining that we had off of school for a few days. But, with the university being closed, the FAC being closed, and the roads being impossible to drive on, Loyola students were definitely suffering from some cabin fever. Here are some ways Loyola students felt during Jonas:

We were excited!

Baltimore gets snow, but never a ton of snow. With at least two feet practically guaranteed, we were all anxiously awaiting the first flurry. We went to bed with maybe about six inches on the ground and woke up to over a foot.

We were anti-school.

Once we got the ‘no-school’ email, everyone was even more excited! When there is snow and no school, you can enjoy the snow! But, when there’s snow and school, you can’t enjoy the snow as much. We didn’t have school, and we were pumped.

We were hungry.

The snow was constant and the wind chill was 0. While most people were looking to stay inside, comfy and cozy, some people didn’t have a choice—‘food’ was the main reason people left their dorms at all. If you aren’t lucky enough to live in Newman with Iggy’s right downstairs, you had to face the cold and walk outside in order to get something to eat.

We were bored.

Practically everything was closed; we had nothing to do. The FAC was closed, so we couldn’t even go workout to burn off some energy. So, we slept. We ate. We did some homework (maybe). We just hung around.

We started to go a little crazy.

Being cooped up inside for days-on-end has a serious effect on the brain. We needed some fresh air, some exercise, and a definite change of scenery. We started to loose our minds.

We were anxious!

After what seemed to be forever, Loyola opened up the FAC (for limited hours). Everyone was dying to burn off some energy, so EVERYONE was at the FAC when it reopened. Literally, everyone.

We were antsy.

Having off of school was great, but we were all starting to get a little antsy. The semester just started, so we didn't have that much work to do. After a while, there really was nothing to do. I think, in some way, we all wanted to resume classes (just a little).

We were unsure.

On Wednesday, Jan. 27, we got news that Loyola would be reopening and classes would be resuming on Jan. 28. We were all hoping for another day off (or maybe even the whole week), but at the same time, I think everyone was glad to get back into a routine.

We were sad.

Classes started back up, and we INSTANTLY missed our free-time. Professors were going twice as fast and assigning twice the amount of work. Feel free to hit again, Jonas. We sure could use another snow day.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
