A Love Letter To New England

Home of the Patriots, the birthplace of Ben and Jerry’s and the holder of the nation’s top universities. Why would I ever leave?

A Love Letter To New England

Dear New England,

Thank you for making me open-minded. With a general mix of liberals and conservatives, I am constantly aware of people’s views and witnessing compromise. Because I was brought up in such an environment, I know to accept people no matter their background or what differences exist. Up here, we tend to be the first to achieve new strides; the leaders if you will. Whether it be the whole inventing America thing or legalizing same-sex marriage first (shoutout to VT), we’re a bunch of movers and shakers.

Thank you for all four seasons. For the ski trips to New Hampshire but summers on the Cape. The fall Saturdays at the local apple orchard became an annual tradition. Although Mother Nature can at times be unpredictable and harsh, she taught us to always be prepared. We’ve never heard of anything other than all-wheel drive, and you can be sure that our wardrobe is divided into sections ranging from Vineyard Vines shorts to the entire North Face catalog.

Thank you for your fast pace. It has taught me to always stay on top of my game and strive for perfection. Although some people may frown upon Masshole driving, others take pride in this aggression and make it known that we (New Englanders) are always on a mission. Sorry we don’t stop to say hello to strangers on the street, we’re just too busy doing big things!

Thank you for the food that tastes like home. Lobster rolls, clam chowder, Boston cream pie, and all the other great food that we’ve become known for. And who could forget those two guys named Ben and Jerry that changed lives forever since they got their start in Vermont? Dunkin' over Starbucks any day of the week.

Thank you for the intellectual and challenging surroundings. The education is top-notch, and with Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth and MIT all in our neck of the woods, the level of achievement among college students at surrounding schools stays competitive. This of course carries over to becoming the home of some of the best hospitals, businesses, and workplaces in the country. What can we say? We're wicked smart.

Thank you for the energetic

sports environment. Only in Boston would you hear “Free Tom Brady” chants all along the street. We are not left to compete with one another over teams in the six states, as we share them and the pride that they bring. Although the Red Sox, Bruins, Patriots, and Celtics all find their home in Massachusetts, the other five root for them as well (unless you find yourself in close proximity to New York and your loyalty falls with them). If you ask me, there is no better way to bring people together.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
