Alaska Young from "Looking for Alaska" is Every Type of Friend

I recently watched Hulu's "Looking for Alaska" in its entirety, and I noticed how the titular character hit a little too close to home. Here is how Alaska Young conveys every type of friend you've ever had from the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Alaska Young from "Looking for Alaska" is Every Type of Friend

1. The Spontaneous Friend

Picture this: It's another Friday night in your small town and there appears to be nothing to do. However, you're friends with Alaska, so there is always something to do. She will randomly call up the crew to go explore an abandoned building, sing in the car driving who knows where, or orchestrate a truly unforgettable prank she came up with on a whim.

2. The Emotionally-Unstable Friend

Ah yes, we all have at least one. These friends are warm and welcoming one day, and cold and distant the next. They have their troubled past and dark secrets. Since these friends don't have a strong grip on their emotions, \their true friends step up to help. But no matter how many skeletons they have in their closet, you never want them out of your life.

3. The Alcoholic Friend

Stressed out? Alcohol. Pissed off? Alcohol. Bored? Alcohol. Friends like these will pretty much find any excuse to have a drink or six. Alaska mainly drinks because she does not know how to deal with her problems, and keeps her lips to closed to everyone except the bottle.

4. The Flirty Friend

Don't you hate it when you can't tell if someone is flirting with you or just being friendly? Alaska Young is one of the biggest examples of this I have ever seen in a television series. She puts most guys at Culver Creek Academy in trance with her good looks, intelligence, and charming personality. I truly think she underestimated the power she had over them or she used it to her advantage.

5. The Lying Friend

This one stings. That friend you've taken on life with betrays you out of the blue, and now what? You're angry because they hurt you. You want to hate them, but you just cannot bring yourself to do so. The good memories outweigh the bad, and soon enough the whole issue will blow over and you guys will make up.

6. The Opinionated Friend

One of the qualities I admired about Alaska was how eager she was to share her opinions, whether it be about shoes or new-wave feminism. Though it was a little annoying at times, she was very open-minded and was always down to discuss pressing issues which grew her friendships rather than weakened them.

7. The Ride-or-Die Friend

I love this friend. You've had your issues, but you know they will always have your back. Alaska was problematic, rash, and reckless, but if you were her friend, nothing could come between that.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
