On Sunday night, the stars took the stage once again to entertain us, show us their formal suits and fancy dresses, and to hand out trophies to the honorees who put all their hard work into all the blockbuster hits that were released within the past year. Like the last few awards shows that aired recently, not many people knew what to expect.
This year the awards ceremony opened up with a performance by Justin Timberlake, singing his hit song “Can’t Stop The Feeling.” The performance had all the stars on their feet and dancing along. Then when this year’s host, comedian and talk show host, Jimmy Kimmel, came out things took an interesting turn. Kimmel brought a light touch to his satire during the broadcast, poking at President Trump without coming off mean-spirited and bringing an overall silliness to the proceedings. In his opening monologue, he even had a tribute to actress Meryl Streep, who President Trump dubbed “overrated” after her Golden Globes speech over a month ago; Kimmel had Streep rise for a standing ovation for the 20 nominations she has received over the years.
Kimmel was not the only one to get political during the awards ceremonies though. Iran’s “The Salesman” won the award for foreign-language film despite the director, Asghar Farhadi’s decision to boycott the ceremony due to President Trump’s travel ban. Even the creators of the animated hit “Zootopia,” had a message that was a denunciation of Trump.
Despite all the political talk, the Oscars did have its funny, memorable and sweet moments. One of the sweetest and most beautiful moments of the show, in my opinion, was the In Memoriam segment where, singer/songwriter, Sara Bareilles performed a beautiful and emotional rendition of Joni Mitchell’s song, “Both Sides Now.” The segment honored stars that died in the past year such as Prince, John Hurt, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Gene Wilder, Kenny Baker, Debbie Reynolds, and Carrie Fischer, and the video closed out with the words of Fischer’s Princess Leia, “May the Force be with you.” The video closing with those words were saddening, and made it seem like Carrie Fischer was giving all of us one last message as Princess Leia.
The second half of the show was filled with a lot of excitement as it included a live performance from John Legend, and much to many viewers delights, “La La Land,” continuing to win numerous awards, including actress in a leading role, cinematography, directing, music (original score), music (original song), and production design.
One of the funniest and most amusing moments of the show though, was when Kimmel brought a group of tourists, who’d just disembarked from a Starline bus into the Dolby Theatre mid ceremony where they came face-to-face with stars such as Denzel Washington, Nicole Kidman, and Emma Stone. Upon finding that an engaged couple was among the tourists, Kimmel enlisted “Fences” star, Denzel Washington, to perform a mock wedding ceremony for the couple.
Perhaps one of the most talked-about moments of the ceremony however, is what happened when presenters Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty announced “La La Land” as the winner for the best picture award. Beatty had open an envelope had a card that said “Emma Stone and La La Land,” after he hesitated, Dunaway announced the winner as “La La Land.” A celebration began on stage, but it quickly came to an end when one of the “La La Land” winners noticed and envelope that actually said “Moonlight” had won the award. Despite all the confusion “Moonlight” director Barry Jenkins took the stage amazement, and while “La “La Land” did not receive this award, they had still received so many.
Overall, the Oscars were interesting this year, all the musical performances, result outcomes, comedy, and drama had me curious and wanting to see how things would continue for the remainder of the broadcast. It is definitely one that I won’t forget easily, and I can only wonder what will be in store for 2018’s ceremony next year.
