5 Ways To Fight Loneliness

Loneliness is a feeling that plagues everyone from time to time. Douglas Coupland once said "The time you feel lonely is the time you most need to be by yourself. Life's cruelest irony." and this phrase truly encapsulates the feelings I have when I'm lonely. I used to just sit in my room and stare blankly at the ceiling for hours upon hours. It is only recently that I have found ways to wage war on it and stop myself from feeling the way that I do when I'm lonely. So that's why I want to help others battle the same foe I have.

1. Writing

Writing down my feelings has always been my go to option. Why? It helps you better understand the way you're feeling by being able to put them into words. Keeping a little journal to put your feelings in is really therapeutic and an amazing way to better understand yourself.

2. Find A New Hobby

This is extremely helpful in taking your mind of things. Putting all your effort into a new task or goal is extremely useful and it is a good way to meet more people who may feel the same way you do. Personally, I picked up volleyball and it's been very good my mental and physical health.

3. Take Breaks From Social Media

Now this may be a crazy idea for some of you but taking a break from social media is vital. Social media in most cases is a reason for feeling lonely, you see others on social media always hanging out and having fun and you start to feel like you're all alone. It's ironic how social media is supposed to keep us together but makes us feel more alone. That's why It's so important to just take a break and focus on other things.

4.Explore The World Around You

Taking a second to explore the world around you can make you realize that you're not truly alone. When I take walks and see the world around me it makes me feel like i'm apart of a bigger group. You feel connected those around you and have a sense of belonging.

5. Talking To Others

Talking to someone may be the most important step because bottling everything up isn't healthy. Talking to someone about the way you're feeling is vital step in the process of coming out of loneliness. If you have no one to talk to try contacting a professional who will sit down and talk with you through it.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
