Why Alabama's Derrick Henry should win the Heisman Trophy

Long Live King Henry

The number four ranked Alabama Crimson Tide Pummeled the number two ranked LSU Tigers at home in Bryant-Denny Stadium, and in doing so, put in question Heisman front runner Leonard Fournette's chances on taking home the historic trophy.

It is not only the fact that the LSU running back ran for only 37 yards and one touchdown against the best front seven in football, it is the fact that his counterpart in Crimson, Derrick Henry, ran wild for 210 and three touchdowns.

Now there are a few things I hate in sports, mostly pro sports teams from Dallas and the Auburn Tigers, but the main thing is knee jerk overreactions based on one game performances. After the game, everyone, myself included, put Derrick Henry as the new Heisman front-runner based on the lack of a performance from Fournette.

Now, you can say it was based on the passion and the sheer love the students and fans of the Alabama Crimson Tide have for Henry and the rest of the team, but it is mainly based on a feeling of "finally Henry is getting the recognition he rightfully deserves." If Derrick Henry wins the Heisman Trophy this year, he rightfully earned it.

We begin the legend of Derrick Henry at the 2014 Sugar Bowl against Oklahoma. With the Tide only just a few weeks removed from the infamous "Kick six," and the overall disappointment of not being able to defend our national title, the team is instead in New Orleans to face the Sooners for the Sugar Bowl.

Oklahoma shocked the world and beat Alabama in a game you felt the Tide wasn't emotionally invested in, except for one person, Derrick Henry. On only eight carries, Henry had 100 yards and a touchdown, and it is widely known among Bama fans if they run him more, they win the game. It was a coming out party for Henry, but the problem with it was that it didn't translate to the next season.

Lane Kiffin was hired as the new offensive coordinator in 2014, and the Alabama offense took a completely new identity. Under Saban, Alabama has always been a team that runs to set up the pass, under Kiffin we threw and ran when wanted to, sometimes not enough.

Amari Cooper was the focal point of the Offense in 2014, and understandably so, he is amazing. Henry took a back seat to running back TJ Yeldon even though he out rushed him, which is no knock on Yeldon. But regardless, Alabama made the inaugural football playoff, but lost to eventual champion, Ohio State. Henry once again had an impactful game on the big stage and Alabama fans once again were forced to ask. "What if we ran Henry more?"

And that is the point where Henry shines when the spotlight is brightest, and Kiffin and Saban know it now. This season, it has been Derrick Henry's world, and we are just living in it. From the very first game against Wisconsin, Alabama fans knew King Henry had arrived.

I am now going to throw out the two FCS games Alabama has played this year, and focus on the big games Alabama has played instead. In game one, against the fourth-best defense in the country, Henry rushed for 147 yards and three touchdowns, against the Ole Miss Rebels "land shark" defense Henry had 127 and a score.

Alabama lost that game, so now every game is a must-win for the Crimson Tide. Against the 14th best defense in the country in the Georgia Bulldogs, and the first of two SEC running back battles, Henry had 148 and one touchdown. Against a very physical Arkansas team he rushed for 95 and one score.

Knowing you can run on a football team, and then going out and doing it are two very different things. Texas A&M hasn't been able to stop the run all year, and they couldn't stop Derrick Henry who ran wild for 236 and two scores. Having a clutch gene is something special, and Henry has it. When the team needed him to make a play against Tennessee, he did, scoring the game-winning touchdown and keeping the Tide's playoff hopes alive.

In the biggest game of the year, Henry was asked to put the team on his back, and he ran all over an LSU team full of NFL talent, and who was ranked the second best team in the country. My point is, when Nick Saban needs Henry to have a big game when it counts Henry answers, every single time.

In my opinion, Trent Richardson is the best college running back I have ever seen. Richardson holds the Alabama record for most rushing yards (1,679) and rushing touchdowns (22) behind arguably the greatest offensive line in CFB history. Henry is on pace to beat the rushing mark by at least 350, and the touchdown mark by at least four behind one of the weakest offensive lines in the Saban era, and he holds the longest active streak of a game where he rushes for a touchdown.

Trent Richardson had one of the best seasons a running back has had in recent memories but didn't win the Heisman. Fournette has had one of the best seasons a running back has had in recent memory, but now that Fournette has left the door open, I expect Henry to earn the Heisman Trophy outright.

I can give you stats all I want to prove why Derrick Henry deserves the Heisman, but the reason why he deserves it is because he once again walked onto the field with the whole country watching and balled out.

When it is all said and done, Derrick Henry will have cemented his legacy in the storied Alabama program. He is as big as Derrick Thomas, as fast as Amari Cooper and as strong as Trent Richardson, and if he were to bring home the Heisman he would be as loved as Mark Ingram.

If Saban brings home Alabama's 16th National Championship, and Henry continues to be the driving force he has been, King Henry will reign supreme in the hearts and minds of the Alabama Faithful.

Roll Tide and long live King Henry.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
