I would love to tell you that long-distance relationships are easy and they all work out as if they were written by Nicholas Sparks, but that's a lie. If someone tells you that long distance relationships are easy, channel your inner Mathew McConaughey from "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days" and call "bullsh*t." Long-distance relationships SUCK.
If you clicked this link to get that extra motivation to make it through a hard day away from your significant other, sorry, but you've been fooled. I'm not going to tell you what you want to hear because it's not true.
Communication is hard.
If you and your significant other are busy, finding free time to sit down and tell the other about your day can be hard. Chances are your only free time is when you're exhausted from your hectic day and just want to drift off to sleep. There's so many times you'll wish they were with you to tell them about your day, but you have to wait until they're free to talk.
Celebrating special days won't be the same.
Anniversaries, birthdays, holidays, they'll never be the same once distance is a factor. If you're not into celebrating those then good for you, long distance is perfect for you. As for the rest of you who love celebrating everything, this will be a very challenging part about your relationship. You don't get to go out to dinner or see them on that special day (besides FaceTime or Skype).
Technology won't always be your friend.
The power went out, the wifi is slow, your phone died, all of these might/ will happen, and usually it's at the worst time possible. I can't tell you how many times I've cursed the wifi because it's running slow and FaceTime is constantly reconnecting. There will be times when you consider chunking your phone out the window because it won't work, or maybe that's just me.
Airports will become your most and least favorite place.
There's nothing like seeing your significant other in the airport after months of being apart. You smile like crazy, kiss and hug, taking in the feeling of finally being with them again. When your time together is over too soon you watch them walk through security and off to their designated terminal trying to fight back the tears. Then when they're out of sight or you're in the privacy of your car the floodgates open and cue the ugly crying.
But despite how hard the distance is and how lonely it gets when they're gone you push through. You count down the days until you see their smiling face again because it's worth it.
