It's that time again! The time for everyone to write 2015 on the top of their papers and awkwardly try to fix it into 2016. Everyone comes around saying they have New Year's resolutions: get thinner, get better grades, buy cuter clothes, maybe try that new Mexican place everyone's been talking about. The biggest part of New Years isn't to become a 'new you' but rather to improve the you that's already there. I've deliberated with others and inquired about their resolutions to find that the general consensus is all the same. I believe that for you to be the 'best' you there's more to be done than just a diet. Here's a few ideas!
To better your mind I believe it to be vital to read more. If you're someone who reads one or two books per year or someone who reads ten to twenty books, there's always room for more. I believe that good literature, even bad literature, is great for your soul. The more that you can absorb and open your mind the better you will feel. Nothing will lighten your spirits more than an inspiring story, strong protagonist, and maybe some shed tears here and there.
I'd also suggest that you get rid of negativity in your life. Negativity doesn't have to be your college major that's weighing you down, but rather all the people you're friends with on Facebook that you don't even know. Maybe the negativity comes forth in a 'negative space,' like your car that you haven't cleaned since you bought it three years ago. Everyone has some sort of negativity in their lives and sometimes we all just need to do early spring cleaning. Delete all of your messages and start from scratch, get rid of all your old papers cramming your computer and desk space, and your closet if you have time.
Taking up a new hobby is also really beneficial as I've come to find. We all have those moments where we get super inspired to try quilting or baking, yet we never follow through. Make 2016 the year that you follow through! If you've ever wanted to try and do a DIY Pinterest project...Get to it! As much as it may be a hassle (and believe me they are) you'll be happy that you've tried it. Who knows? Maybe wood carving was a talent you didn't know that you had!
As cliché as it seems, I also really believe in travel. When I talk travel I don't necessarily mean buying a plane ticket to the next country (though that is the best option). Sometimes you just need to get in the car and keep driving until you go somewhere fun. Take a few of your friends and go down to Miami for a day, go to the hole-in-the wall restaurant you saw that one time, and look for all the fun downtown events you can. Sometimes your next travel destination was right in your backyard.
All in all, I know that each of us will have a good year. Whether you meet your new best friend or buy a cat...It'll all work out. Everyone needs to remember that it's great to try new things and that this year can be your best year yet as long as you put your mind to it. If you want to dye your hair pink, dye it pink! If you want to eat three dozen donuts in one sitting, you do it. Make 2016 the year of giving more of a damn about other people and less of a damn about what other people think of you. Positive vibes for all and Happy New Year!
