Life From the Perspective of a Six-Year-Old

No matter the age, we all view life through a different looking glass.

Life From the Perspective of a Six-Year-Old
Jazmine Herrera

I was 15 years old when my little brother, Jacob, was born. At the time, I was caught up in whatever it was that teenagers fill their time with and wasn't very attentive. Regardless, Jacob has been a shining bright light in my life since the day he was born. He brings an enormous amount of happiness into my life and it all has to do with his way of being. He is funny, witty and intelligent beyond his years.

Now, because I know my brother always has something to say about everything and anything, I decided to question him about life. I knew his answers would either be out of this world or make dozens of people smile and laugh. Here's how the conversation went.

Question: What do you think about life?
Answer: Life is about, like, feeling good and it makes you so happy.

Q: Why do people go to school?
A: They need to learn.

Q: Why do we need to learn?
A: Because you need to learn about school, homework, and science!

Q: What would happen if we didn't learn?
A: You would not learn and then you would be a dummy.

Q: Why do people work?
A: Because if they don't work they lose their stuff like their bed, closet, room, and sister.

Q: What are you going to do for work?
A: I'm going to be a police officer, hockey player, and a grown up. (Not exactly sure how he will manage all three.)

Q: What is love?
A: Love means you love someone.

Q: How do you feel when you love someone?
A: You feel happy!

Q: If you were to marry someone how would you know you love that person?
A: Because if you look at her face you would think she is the right girl for you.

Q: How do you know that?
A: I don't know. I just thought of it.

Q: How do you know when you are supposed to marry someone?
A: If you have a ring.

Q: How do you know it's the right person to give a ring to?
A: You have to look at them and look at their parents and their sons and their mothers.

Q: Why do you have to do that?
A: Because you have to check them out and see if they are bad guys or good guys.

Q: When should you kiss your wife?
A: Only when you are married.

Q: How do you know Papa and Mama are in love?
A: You already asked me that! Because they have a ring. (One would thinks because of love, guess not.)

Q: Do your parents have to like the person you marry?
A: Yes, because if they don't like her you have to find someone else.

Q: Why are we brother and sister?
A: Because you're big and I'm little.

Q: How are we brother and sister?
A: I don't know.

Q: Do you like having a sister?
A: Yes, because sometimes they play with you.

Q: What is the biggest advice you could give someone? (At this point, I had to explain what "advice" meant.)
A: You can tell them to play with you and that you love them.

After this entertaining interview with my brother, I felt as though there were three things we could learn from him: 1. Life truly is about being happy. No matter what you do, where you are, or whom you are with, be sure to fill your life with an enormous amount of happiness and everything else will follow. 2. Make time for those you love because there is no greater joy in the world. 3. Be sure to tell your family and friends you love them often.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
