The Pacific Northwest is a beautiful place. Washington state is the center of great music, great food, and the majestic Space Needle. After living in the state of Washington for over 7 years, there have been some patterns that I’ve noticed. Every state has its own unique style, and Washington is no different. We have beautiful trees, amazing views, and one-of-a-kind folks walking the streets. Here are some stereotypes that we are tired of hearing, yet they are still true.
You own a rain coat but not an umbrella.
You probably have multiple colors of that North Face raincoat or just a simple black one. Whether you admit it or not, you want to hate the rain, but every time it starts to pour, the thought of home comes to your mind, and who even uses an umbrella in Washington?
You get asked, “Do you like Macklemore?”
Yes, I know Macklemore is from Washington. Yes, I know someone who’s met him before. Why do people just assume that you are Macklemore’s number-one fan if you are from Washington? Gosh. I mean, maybe I kind of love him.
When you tell people you’re from Washington, they assume Washington, D.C.
No. There is more than one Washington. Let’s be honest: Washington state is way cooler than D.C. We don’t have a White House, but we do have awesome music and endless amounts of food.
People think Seattle is Washington.
"Are you from Seattle?" is one of the questions that gets tossed around like no other when someone finds out that you are from Washington. I hope people know that there is more than one city in Washington: Federal Way, Magnolia, Bellevue, Longview, North Bend; show every city some love.
You bleed either crimson and gray or purple and gold.
"Go Cougs" or "Go Dawgs" is the phrase that you will hear a lot on the streets of Washington, especially after Thanksgiving. WSU and UW have this beautiful friendly rivalry that I hope will never end.
12th man nation.
Once you step foot into Washington, you will see folks repping' the 12th man shirts and see Seahawks flags waving around. The Seattle Seahawks really brought the state of Washington together as a 12th man family. You will never find a closer bond than the one you find in Washington.
You or someone you know wear Birkenstock, Patagonia or Uggs on the daily.
It’s all about comfort in Washington and we don’t care whether it looks ugly or not. As long as it’s comfortable on our feet and body, it’s a yes. Paying $100 is definitely worth it for the uniform of the state of Washington.
You’ve been dragged on a hike.
Hiking, whether it’s your thing or not, you’ve been hiking at least once. From Rattle Snake Ridge to Mount Rainier, a hike is a hike. It is a must to appreciate the beauty of nature if you’re living in the beautiful Pacific Northwest.
