Dear My Fellow Writers,
How are you today? If you tried to write anything today, I’m guessing you’re pretty frustrated. Well if it makes you feel any better, I completely understand. I started writing three completely different articles before settling on this one and honestly, it will be a miracle if I manage to get this one done in an hour. I’ve checked all three of my emails, search for the perfect playlist, and found a snack since starting this letter, so at this rate, it’s not likely.
If you guys are anything like me, you may have already gotten to the point where you’ve desperately turned to the internet in search for the cure to writers block just to discover, there is none. Now you’re aimlessly roaming the internet, when all you really want is to release all the creative juices you know you have, but can’t access.
Well fear no more!!! I (clearly) don’t have the answers to your prayers, but I definitely have better alternatives!
So put down your laptop (after reading this of course) and try one of these:
- Explore a different creative outlet. Music, photography, art etc., trying something new may not get you writing again, but it will definitely help release all the pent up creative energy you have.
- Find interesting writing prompts that don’t require full stories. If you just can’t shake the urge to write, writing prompts can be really helpful. Finding prompts that require short responses helps you avoid the frustration of not being able to write more than a paragraph before getting stuck.
- Edit your past writing. You’d be surprised how much your own writing can inspire you. And the beautiful thing about editing is that it’s a cross between reading and writing!
- Declutter. Declutter anything. Your phone, your room, your book bag. Sometimes all you need is a clear space and a clear head to get you back on track.
- Cross something off your bucket list. People always say write what you know, but what if you don’t have anything to write about? Maybe you need to go out and do something fun! Something you’ve always wanted to do! It not only gives you the chance to get out of your own head, but it may inspire an amazing piece of writing!
- Force yourself to write. If all else fails, grab a cup of coffee or tea, lock your door, turn off the Wi-Fi, and take things one word at a time.
I wish you all the best of luck in your struggles through writers block. Writing is hard, very hard, but you’re not alone. I believe in you! And in case you were wondering, it took about an hour and a half to finish.
Good Luck,
Kae
