Dearest Uniform Skirt,
How are you, old friend? As I was packing up my drawers to head back to college, I found you shoved in the corner of my dresser, seemingly begging me to let you tag along. Oh, how I wish I could take you. You made my life so much simpler for four years. Literally, you were a security blanket that I could button around my waist. I believe now is the time I give you the long overdue thank you letter you deserve.
High school is supposed to be one of the toughest, most emotionally draining years of a girl's life, right? The social pressures to always to be perfectly presentable, dressed in the latest trends, is a constant stress on young girls today. And that is where I want to stop and issue my first thank you to you, my dear kilt.
Because I was forced to be clad in matching plaid with every single other student in the school, I learned an invaluable lesson: clothing does not define you. I discovered that by wearing you, people actually took the time to get to know me for me, not because of some stunning outfit I had put together. Together, we made some lifelong friends who liked us for who we were on the inside, not what we looked like from the outside.
I would also like to thank you for the little moments we shared throughout my four years of high school. Remember when I spilled that chemistry experiment and was too terrified to ask the teacher for cleaning materials? There you were, dependable as ever, soaking up the mess and proving once and for all that you truly are more absorbent than any paper towel in existence.
As your plaid coloring changed from green to blue, I changed right along with you. With you wrapped tightly around my waist, I went from the girl who was too scared to raise her hand in class, to a young woman who is ready to tackle the world and achieve her dreams. People say it takes confidence to wear red. You and I both know that the confidence needed to rock a plaid uniform kilt far exceeds that. And for that, I can't thank you enough.
Alright my dear skirt, I think I've reminisced enough about our glory days. I do need to get back to packing for college after all. But before I go, I just want to thank you one last time. Thank you for making it so quick and easy to get dressed every morning. Thank you for letting me wear you as pajamas on those nights where studying and sleep merged into one. Thank you for being with me every single day of high school, four years that would have been a lot tougher without you buttoned around my waist. Simply put, thank you for being the best skirt I have ever owned. The pattern plaid will forever hold a special place in both my heart and my wardrobe.
Love,
A girl who dearly misses her uniform skirt
