I think it’s safe to say, that we all wish we could send our past-selves a letter. Just to let ourselves know that everything we worried about turned out to be just fine. I really believe in reflecting on the past so that we can learn from it; the things that happen to us help shape us into the people we become. Take some time today and write yourself a letter, remind yourself that everything is going to be okay.
Dear Self,
I wish I could have sent this to you on several occasions in the last few years since graduating from high school, I know you could have used it. Better late than never, I suppose.
There are many times in these next few years that will test you. It won’t always be a walk in the park, but those are the moments that define you. Don’t ever give in, or give up. At the end of the day, you are the only one who has to live with the choices you make, so do what makes you happy. The best advice I can give you is to trust your gut. At the end of the day you will know what to do.
The next best set of advice I can give you is to have fun. That sounds so cliché, but it’s so true. These next few years are going to be some of the best in your life. Make the crazy memories, stay out late. You can always catch up on sleep later. Remember to spend time with your family – you will miss them so much when you leave. You’re starting a new chapter in your life and you will want to end it on a positive note.
On the subject of the next chapter in your life: all your hard work is going to pay off. It may seem like a million years away but it will be here sooner than you think, and you are going to love Sam Houston. It’s going to be everything you’ve thought it would be and more. Although there will be days where college life will make you want to poke your eyes out, at the end of the day you’ll always remember how lucky you are.
Don’t stress out about who’s dating whom, or what boy isn’t texting you back. Don’t let yourself lose sight of what is actually important right now. Make friends, spend your Thursday nights baking cookies and drinking wine out of the bottle. Eventually, the right guy is going to come along, I promise. But until then, enjoy spending time with your friends.
I want you to look in the mirror at least once a day and tell yourself that you are special. Look at yourself and just think “Dang, I look good today.” Do not, and I repeat, DO NOT EVER let yourself think that because you don’t look a certain way that you aren’t beautiful, because you are. You are funny, you speak your mind, and you care a lot about the people in your life. You are an A1 person and you should never feel like you aren’t.
I would hope that this would find you on a bad day, and I would hope that this would make you smile. We all need a little bit of reassurance from time to time. Please don’t worry, from me to you, it’s going to work out just fine.
Love,
Yourself
