A Letter To The Roommate That Became My Best Friend

It's the best of both worlds.

A Letter To The Roommate That Became My Best Friend
Brittany Phelps

Dear roomie,

Well you just left, and checked out of our room for the year. I'm just sitting over here in our room sobbing by myself as if I will never see you again. I never thought I'd be crying so much, let alone be crying at all, but I am because after this year, I found you to be more than just a roommate. You became my best friend.

We were friends before we moved in together but were not super close at the time. I was very excited to live with you but also very nervous. It took us some time to get comfortable with each other, but we bonded so well over our daily chocolate intake and country music that are friendship only grew from there.

After syllabus week, I was already so overwhelmed with school but thanks to you, you were there for me when I needed help. You always knew what to say and how to make me feel better, whether that was giving me chocolate or giving me advice. Because of you, I barely would go out. I'd stay in on Friday nights, either studying or hanging with you. I would spend late nights at the library instead of with friends doing who knows what. I'd get up super early to go study for an exam. But, these aren't bad things. If it wasn't for you, I would not have succeeded so much this semester. I enjoyed doing these things and most importantly, I was happy doing them. So thank you for being a good influence and always encouraging me.

Not only did you make me do well in school, but you also made me become a happier person. There was never a dull moment with you. We'd always be laughing about something, even if it was over something so silly. Eating rice for breakfast, studying at 3 a.m., cuddling with you in your bed, gossiping about boys like we were in middle school, getting crazy on Saturday nights, sharing each others clothes, going to grab food at the most random times, or all the Walmart or Starbucks runs we had.

Sure, we have had our little disagreements but there was nothing we could not figure out. We couldn't really even be mad if we tried because we'd end up laughing about it later. Sometimes, I would not see you all day, and I'd be sad. Whenever you came home, you'd always give me a hug and ask about my day. We text each other to check in or to see what we were both doing that night. It became silly to ask to borrow clothes, hair products, or food because no matter what, our answers were always yes.

This year has flown by and honestly, I do not understand where the time went. Looking back to the beginning of the year and how far we have come is crazy. Who knew I would have gained a new best friend. Thank you for putting up with me and my shenanigans. Thank you for making this semester the best one yet. Thank you for everything you have done for me, and thank you for making me a better person. But most importantly, thank you for being the best roommate anyone could ever ask for.

Love,

Your roommate

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
