A Letter to the Policeman Who Pulled Me Over

Thank you for the ticket. I know I seem frustrated, and I’m sorry you have to deal with frustrated people all day. The truth is, I am happy you pulled me over. By pulling me over, you just made the roads a little safer. Whatever I did to deserve this, be it speeding or running a stop sign, I did deserve it, and you are just doing your job.

Thank you for being there. When reckless behavior ensues I’m glad people like you prioritize the good of the community over whatever inconvenience handling the situation brings you. Even though seeing you may startle me while I’m driving, I am grateful that you are there to prevent disaster and to make our town a safer place.

Thank you for the long hours. When I see you at 2 a.m., I can’t help but wonder how long you have been working and when the last time you saw you family was. I can only imagine how exhausting it must be to remain alert and ready to act in to the early morning hours.

Thank you for being available. Whenever I feel I am in a shady situation, thank you for allowing me to have 911 pre-dialed on my phone just in case. I am grateful to know you will come to help no matter where I am or what it is going on.

Thank you for taking risks. Whenever anyone calls, thank you for coming and being ready to protect. You are willing to throw yourself into deadly situations, and you are willing to take wounds, some fatal, to protect others. It takes true bravery to do what you do — I know I could never be that brave. I could never do what you do.

Thank you for your job. You chose to be a policeman. You went through all the training, you accepted all the risks, and you understood all the responsibility and all the long hours you took on. All of this for a position where you are under-appreciated, where there is grave danger you face on the daily, and not a ton of pay.

So thank you for the ticket. I appreciate what you do more than you know, and I respect you highly for keeping us safe. This ticket is a penalty for my wrong doing, and I feel good knowing that you are helping stop all the wrong-doings. You help me feel safe. What you do is the most important job in the world. I cannot imagine the stress you are constantly under and the things you have seen and the things you have done.

Thank you for giving me someone to look up to and to respect, just by doing your job.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
