To The Heart-Broken Girl:
I have been there. I have had my heart broken a couple of times, in fact. I have cried, I have cursed (oh, how much did I curse) and I have survived. I am here, months after the heart-ache, and I am stronger than ever. Cliché, right? Well, this letter is not meant to be cliché, but to help you heal that vital organ of yours and show you that you are worth it.
I won’t tell you that time will heal anything or that you should take it day-by-day. I hate that advice, I can’t take it. I do believe things will get better, I believe there is a destiny and a reason for everything to happen. But hearing that advice is like a kick in the gut. Heart Broken Girl, you know things will get better with time, right? You won't suffer forever and that you'll find another guy.
So why do you want to listen to me saying that that will happen? You want to know HOW it will happen, and how you can heal and move on. First, you have to cry it out. Go to the market and buy your favorite Ben and Jerry’s flavor –I highly recommend half baked, it has helped me a lot in the past. Also, watch some sad movie. Think of Elle Woods when Warner told her she wasn’t enough for him* and how she ate a bunch of chocolate while crying in her bed.
Did you cry your eyeballs out? Good, now it’s time to get out of your bed and start doing fun stuff. Go to the gym because exercising will help your mood, make you feel 10 times better. I know I am using Elle Woods here a lot, but she once said that exercising gives you endorphins, endorphins make you happy; happy people don’t shoot their husbands, they just don’t. Also, ditch the junk food and eat healthier - after all, you are what you eat.
Decide to go to your classes, focus on your academic life, and on being a successful kick ass. Join an organization and flirt with the hot guy who just delivered the pizza. Grow your social network and focus on you.
Go out with your friends. Kiss a guy or a girl, maybe kiss one of each and dance your butt off. Go to the Jersey shore, to the California Shore-–that’s a thing right? Or go to Europe. Now you can study abroad without worrying about your boy back home. Hello romance with a sexy European, bye ex-boyfriend!
Think of how many things you can do for yourself, and just for yourself. Think how lucky you are that you loved someone so much, and what the relationship taught you. Because every experience makes you grow and makes you a stronger person. What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger right? Start focusing on you and then you will face the day where everything IS better.
*Side Note: she was more than enough and you are too. If he said you are not enough, contact me and we will egg his house. Or not. I won’t tell, I promise.
