Unsurprisingly, I write letters to my future self frequently, letters to open on my graduation day, wedding day, and when I have my first child. I always try my best to remind myself what I'm going through and encourage my future self to keep going whether times are happy or sad. So here's a super public version of my letter to future me.
Dear Me,
At this point in your life, you're struggling through sophomore year, wondering how it was that you coasted through high school with As and Bs as you now accept Cs as an acceptable grade. I imagine you'll read this at a time when you're no longer in school but doing real adult work. So, honestly, this futile complaining about my college course load is hopefully making you laugh. Right now I'm really uncertain of where my life will take me; I have all my hopes and dreams for the future, but as you know I've frequently found out, God always has a different plan. When you find yourself thinking back if college Anissa would be proud of you, the answer will always be yes.
After 19 years in my skin, I do know that, no matter where you go in life, you have a good head on your shoulders and a strong heart. I will always be proud of what you're doing as long as you are standing up for what you believe in and live a life of fulfillment through your faith and relationships. I hope you've found a guy that makes you laugh uncontrollably, holds you when you cry, and understands everything you've had to go through to get to where you are now. If he's worth your time, he will listen to your pointless dramas and never get tired of hearing the sound of your voice. Honestly, anyone who can stand the sound of your voice as much as you enjoy hearing it deserves you.
No matter where your career takes you, I hope it fulfills you. I plan and dream right now, but if that doesn't make you happy, I hope you have the courage to do something different. Whatever you're doing, I hope you are still serving others. Always remember you are stronger with God than you are without him. Take the time to cry when times are get hard and don't forget to call your mother whether you live right next door or across the country. I hope you've accomplished everything you wanted and are provided with the things you did not know you needed. Wherever you end up five, 10 or 20 years from now, I hope you get the chance to read this and to remember how proud I am of you. Every time life kicked you in the butt, you stood up stronger and did better; I have no doubt you will continue doing that.
With Love,
Past Me
P.S. I hope you still answer onion rings when people ask your favorite food and your fun fact is still the fact that you can name all 19 Duggar children in order.
