A Letter To Dylann Roof

The Holy City will forever be scarred by your hate crimes.

Dylann Roof:

What you did to my city, and the beautiful lives that you took from my city, can never be forgotten or forgiven.

What you did was a reminder of just how little racial progress has really been made in the United States. It is a reminder that white supremacy is in fact on the rise in the United States, and that racism will never die with older generations. Racism is an epidemic passed down from parent(s) to child.

When you carefully formulated your plans, and plotted your attack, you lost any right to plea insanity. You rationalized your attack. You carried it through methodically, and I am sick and tired of hearing that you are just one crazy kid who “wasn’t right in the head.” Call it what it is: white supremacy and domestic terrorism.

You are the all-too-common incarnation of white male dominance and southern racial hierarchy. You are the product of a culture that systematically refuses change or growth or knowledge. You walked into the Mother Emanuel A.M.E Church with clear intentions: to execute the innocent, strictly because of the color of their skin. You walked into a place of worship -- one that welcomed you with open arms -- to start a new race war in the city where the first one began.

However, you have failed in that attempt, because our city is growing, changing and learning as a result of your hate crimes. Though there are still those here just like you, whether they be hiding behind business suits or boldly brandishing confederate flags on their front lawns, there are so many more of us. There are so many more of us here who stand for peace, love and acceptance. There are more of us here who fight for knowledge, truth and justice.

I am glad that you have been found guilty, but I hope that justice is truly served somehow in the years to come. I hope that as a city and as a country, we can collectively stand up together and fight the rise of white supremacy and racial oppression in our country. I hope that we can do these things in spite of you. I hope that through your actions, we can initiate a movement for change.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
