A Letter To The Over-Thinkers

Dear over-thinkers,

Wouldn't you be able to walk through life with ease if you were more content, more optimistic, even more relaxed?

Alright, you've got me. That was a trick question because chances are most "over-thinkers" read that question and resentfully thought this:

You mean wouldn't life be easier if I were less ambitious, more naive, and even unfocused?

From a fellow over-thinker, I get it. Over analyzing everything usually... actually, almost always, gets us into trouble. We are pretty sure of ourselves, but never truly sure of anything else. This is because for us, there is always more to notice, more to learn, more to achieve, more to assess. The list simply never ends.

We are those people who listen to the lyrics, instead of mindlessly bopping our heads to the beat of whatever is on the radio.

It's difficult for us to just let something be. As naturally passionate and calculated people, we assume that every tweet, every song, every text, seriously everything must hold some deeper meaning.

Are we always right about that?

Of course not.

Fitzgerald's character, Daisy in The Great Gatsby, said it best-

And I hope she'll be a fool – that's the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool.

To be able to shut all of the over analyzing off, and to walk through life with simplicity would eliminate a lot of conflict and stress.

Maybe then you wouldn't have so many opinions, you wouldn't speak up so much, you'd feel as if you had accomplished everything, you wouldn't notice when people were deceiving you.

You could happily turn a blind eye to the brutality of reality and sleep just fine at night.

As effortlessly tempting as that sounds, there is so much more to being an over-thinker than just feeling a tad bit of craziness, and a whole lot of restlessness.

It's the over-thinkers who are able to critique society, pay attention to politics, assess the authenticity of their relationships, and determine the validity of all the ideas that are constantly being projected into the world around them.

This is such a gift, even when it may not always feel like one.

Just as straight forward as you can see all of the unfortunate, tough things about the world; you maintain that same clarity when you see all of the wonderful things within people. And since you see the world so honestly, you have the ability to point all of the amazing things that you see in others, out to them.

Being aware of the truths around you, and to be able to be accepting of them as harsh as they can be at times; and still be able to accomplish your goals, and see the best in people is worth so much more than just blindly adopting some false perception of all that is in this world.

Others may say that enough is never enough for you.

They're probably right, but you should never apologize for that.

Although you have your days when you wish that you could be a beautiful little fool. You know in your core, that nothing, and I mean nothing- feels better than knowing that you are completely aware of the world around you. You know that it is not perfect. That doesn't hinder you from writing down your check-list and fiercely crossing everything off, only to add more. When you lay your head down at night, it may take longer for you to fall asleep than those with less bustling thoughts. But, we both know that you wouldn't have it any other way. Stress is a natural state for you, challenges are comforting. You're over-thinking nature provides you with the gift of candidly tackling adversities head on.

Over-thinking is your strength, not your weakness.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
