A Letter to Society and Rape/Sexual Assault Victims

Did you know that 1 in 6 women will fall victim to rape

Or attempted at some point in their lives? Their attackers?

Maybe a stranger, teacher, coach or a friend in disguise.

Some told its’ their fault, how dare they have fun, don’t wear

short skirts, don’t flirt and nothing will be done. Walk in

Groups, don’t tease or tempt.

Because yea, obviously your knee showing is you begging for someone to come and be your pimp.

You need to leave class your shoulder is showing

But even doing all of this, the boys still look without you knowing.

Teach them to respect, be kind. No means no….not if I get her drunk

she won’t decline. Don’t touch me there it’s not a joke. No I don’t want to have sex! I don’t care if it’s just want one stroke!

No Means No.

So tired of people saying her word against theirs

But what about society's words as well? What about the people who say things like...

Their future is too bright to be messed up by the school slut. How dare she get too drunk, how dare she not keep her whore mouth shut! Oh she overdosed? She just wants attention….oh she use to flirt with the one guy?

Funny how that didn’t get a mention.

She has daddy issues of course it’s her fault, she wasn’t taught how

to behave. Can’t blames those boys, she dug her own grave.

Did you know that even though proof like pictures and video’s spread like wildfire? They’ll still blame the girl. Say things like “she shouldn’t have dressed like a prostitute for hire.”

But she led him on and then said No! Still he should have stopped. Those two letters formed together don’t mean go!

Did you know that men and young boys can fall victim

To sexual assault as well. But some never report it because their peers will no doubt give them hell.

“She threw herself at you bro! I can’t believe you turned her down.”

Stop making victims feel like their wrong, stop burying their identities in the ground.

Stop calling them out of their names.

They didn’t want any of this, stop making them feel like they shouldn't even exist!

To anyone who has been attacked, whether you have told your story or you didn’t. This isn’t the end, you still have pages to be written.

I didn’t write this just because it’s a trending topic. I wrote this because it becoming too common of a thing, and hopefully adding my voice to the movement, will maybe somehow help stop it.

I wrote this because I want the victims to know their lives are worth living.

And I hope you find faith in this world that is sometimes unforgiving.

But until then, I just have questions that need to be answered.

Did you know that the most rape victims tend to commit suicide?

Living in pain, so unbearable they just wanna run & hide.

Did you know that 1 and 6 women will be victims of rape or attempted at some point in their lives, it happens to men too. Though that shouldn’t come as surprise.

But I’m sure you didn’t know.

Because this is still happening….and all I can do it just pray its gets better.

But until then, Dear Victims is my spoken word letter.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
