A Letter To My Future Self
Meredith Troxel

Dear future self,

I hope that if you read this 5, 10, or even 15 years from now, you can relate to it. Whether it's one point or all of them that help you through your current struggles. I hope that all is well and that you are living a life only you could imagine. Always remember that the struggles you face today are so small. Your current F in Ethnic Studies will not matter after you move the tassel from right to left. Do bigger and better things for yourself. All in all, here are the things I hope you find or realize.

I hope you get a big job in a big city, with the Range Rover you always wanted. I hope you travel the world after graduation, seeing every city on your bucket list. I hope you get the fluffiest Himalayan cat and a Husky with bright blue eyes in your small apartment in San Francisco.

I hope you become a licensed makeup artist. Countless hours doing your makeup, spending so much money at Sephora, and watching KathleenLights videos for hours will all be worth it. I hope you do makeup for Jennifer Lawrence and your other favorites. I hope one day you will have the courage to make a Youtube channel, showcasing your talents. I also hope that you have your own photography business and have the opportunity to teach others about something you love.

I hope you realize your potential. The internship you are looking for will come. Don't waste five more days trying to get the design exactly perfect and accept the flaws; You aren't perfect. I hope you take pictures where ever you go and never leave the camera at home.

I hope you never misplace your flash drive again, keep your room clean, and always have your makeup in its draws and not strewed all over your desk. Your 18-year-old self is currently writing this and looking at the desk disaster with the broken mirror in the center of it all.

I hope you never get a ticket. You haven't in 2 years of driving so I think you can always be on the lucky side.

I hope you graduate early. Work harder now so you can do more later. I hope your portfolio overflows with work that you must showcase because you are so proud of it.

I hope you grow closer to those who mean a lot to you, and realize that the ones who are there now, will not and shouldn't be there later. If they wouldn't come at your time of need, drop them. All positive vibes from now on.

I hope you realize the being quiet is perfectly okay. You never liked those that are loud and always kept to yourself. That is the best way to be. Staying up till 3 in the morning on weekends is a part of life. I hope you get your alone time every day. Your favorite place to be is alone in your bed with Oreos, Starbucks, and YouTube.

I hope you take on more leadership positions, buy stock in Apple, and get invited to a movie premiere. I hope you find/realize who that one person is who makes you see the good in life, makes you a better person, and understands that you aren't like anyone else. I hope this person is your person.

Overall, I hope you find your worth, self-love, realize your potential, and find those who truly care for you. Everyone is temporary and you can already see this. Life is tough, you cannot just go with the flow and expect to not get hit along the way. You are far better than the petty people in your life. Drama is not needed. Go on spontaneous adventures with your best friend, buy that $40 highlighter, make a change in the world. Don't get disgruntled when your life plan doesn't go exactly like you had it planned out. Don't let anyone tell you different about your goals and dreams. If you put your mind to it, you can do it. Other peoples' small opinions do not matter. Meet new people and just embrace that life gives you so many chances to start over. Live life, and don't ever take anything for granted.

Love,

Your 18 year old self.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
