Taylor Swift, in true Taylor Swift fashion, has wedged herself into some serious drama in the past couple of weeks. Between her recently fling with Tom Hiddleston shortly after a seemingly not-so-amicable breakup with ex-beau Calvin Harris and the Kanye West “Famous” debacle, the pop star’s PR team has been having nothing short of a field day.
For a quick recap, this past week, the defenders of Taylor’s public image have tackled the reveal of Harris’s hit “This Is What You Came For” as the work of the famed songwriter as well as Kanye’s wife Kim Kardashian dragging her on the famous reality show “Keeping Up With The Kardashians” for pretending she didn’t know about the controversial line in her hubby’s latest single. Swift’s social media has been flooded with haters commenting snake emojis to suggest her likeness as the bad guy in both situations, however, as shady as her actions seem on the surface, the accusers in both scenarios aren’t exactly squeaky clean either.
As far as the Calvin Harris song-credit issue, Swift has every right to claim credit to her work. It’s likely that she kept her involvement in the song a secret initially to let her boyfriend at the time shine for his production skills as a DJ. She had right at any point to take ownership of the lyrics because (1) she wrote them and (2) she even sang on the track without anyone realizing it.
Ironically, in this scenario, Harris is the one creating the drama. He confirmed the rumors about the song on Twitter, noting Swift “smashed it as usual” with the lyrics to his hit single, but then proceeded to create a firestorm, bringing up her issues with Katy Perry and frankly whining like a jealous ex-boyfriend. The twitter rant was nothing short of a petty jab by someone who, a month out from a break-up, realized that letting go of one of the biggest names in music would catapult him further into the limelight by milking the breakup. It’s pathetic, and both parties just need to move on.
As for the “leaked” video of Kanye discussing “Famous” with Taylor, although her actions in the situation were dishonest, the way the info was presented wasn’t exactly heroic on Kim K’s part. If this attack on her husband was so disgusting and pathetic to her, she should have called her out the night of the Grammy’s instead of waiting till an episode of her reality show rolled around two months later. This belated attack is nothing besides fodder for good reality TV, and both camps know it well. No one’s been surprised before that Kim would stoop that low for ratings, so let’s just label it as it is: a publicity stunt.
Though Taylor’s Swift’s recent public issues are largely self-inflicted, the reactions from the opposite parties have not been appropriate either. So, call her a snake, call her a liar, but also throw the labels of “petty ex-boyfriend” and “reality star slave” the other way if you want to start naming names.
