The gift of growing up around dogs is one to be cherished. When we're surrounded by the comfort of a furry beating heart, wet nose, slobbery kisses, and four paws to hold, the world seems so simple. Days spent chasing squirrels, basking in a backyard sun, and slobbering over freshly-baked cookies teach our dogs lessons that they mediate to us in turn. So, thank you to man’s best friend for teaching me exactly what a man could not.
1. My dog taught me to stop being quick to judge.
Any dog would tackle a person with warm kisses no matter their background, appearance, or stereotype.
2. My dog taught me to greet everyone as if it’s for the first time.
Dogs greet their family with such warmth, excitement, and love that it’s palpable.
3. My dog taught me to not take things too seriously.
Got tears? Your dog will take care of those right away.
4. My dog taught me how to grieve.
There’s just something about killing a squirrel and admitting guilt. Then grieving for the small animal’s death. My dog would hit the dog bed to ponder his decisions.
5. My dog taught me that it’s OK to cry.
(Or to put my tail between my legs.) Admitting defeat isn’t easy, but watch how good your dog is at it.
6. My dog taught me that food is really good.
Life’s too short not to jump up on the counter and lick the icing off a cake, isn’t it?
7. My dog taught me that actions speak louder than words.
Dogs don’t need any words to show you how much they care for you.
8. My dog taught me to ask for forgiveness.
We humans have those “puppy-dog eyes,” too. Put them to work.
9. My dog taught me to find excitement in the little things.
New experiment: squeal with excitement every time your dog barks.
10. My dog taught me to appreciate family.
They’re always going to be there at the end of the day, whether or not it’s meal time.
11. My dog taught me to trust my gut.
If that fence looks like it might shock them, there’s not a chance they’re going to get their tennis ball on the other side.
Thank you, dogs.
