A couple days ago, I woke up with a very sore throat. Panic immediately hit me like a truck. I tried to justify it by blaming my fan that blows cool air down my throat at night, but deep down I knew that it wasn't the cause. The culprit was a cold, a deadly cold. It had snuck up on me and hit me like a well-trained ninja. I can't remember the last time I really had a cold, so I had lost all the knowledge on how to defeat this kind of beast! Luckily my pain is your gain. Here are some things I learned about having a bad cold.
1. It's going to get worse before it gets better.
That's right, you are going to feel worse than you feel the first day! Trust me it is very possible, and it sucks. The best plan is to prepare for the worst. At this point you can still go out in public without passing out, so get a lot of medicine (I usually go for dayquil/nyquil but whatever you prefer), tissues, heating pad and some fluffy socks to keep warm. Once you have these key items, you will have a stronger defense against this cold.
2. You're going to feel like you're surrounded by fluffy clouds at all times.
This may sound weird, but when you have a cold you feel really comfy. Everything around you feels like the most heavenly bed imaginable. I took a nap on my carpet floor and I swear it felt better than my bed at that moment. Because you have the "cozy goggles," as I like to call them, you can set up camp anywhere and have an awesome Netflix binge! Or just a nap.
3. Food doesn't taste good.Ever.
I consumed a burger with mac and cheese on top the other day (oh my god I know) and while I could tell it was good, I couldn't taste it at all. I was horrified. It felt like such a waste of a burger. Since you can't smell because your nose is all clogged up, you can't enjoy food's aroma and its taste. This is one of the worst parts of having a cold in my opinion. If you want to keep it safe, I would suggest a steady diet of chicken noodle soup. It has a basic flavor and is really good to eat when you're sick. So really it's a win-win.
4. People avoid you like you actually have the plague
When people hear you have a little case of the sniffles they back away 10-feet and tell you to "get" like a badly behaved dog. People are terrified of getting a cold, and they will go to extreme measures to avoid the people who are suffering from it. Now I get it, I wouldn't want to catch it either, but maybe instead of banishing people with colds, back away slowly and wish them well. Maybe have soup delivered to their house. Just treat people the way you'd want to be treated when you're sick! Don't forget to be nice!
