In a time where everyone lives a seditary lifestyle, it’s hard to find the motivation to go to the gym or do some small exercises in your apartment or dorm. I am guilty of making up excuses as to why I won’t go to the gym today, but I’ll definitely go tomorrow. I never end up going the next day. As the stress of graduation and the impending time of becoming a real adult, I’ve found a few things that get my butt in the gym.
1. Find a gym buddy
Find someone who loves going to the gym. Someone who is really motivated to workout or get fit. Their energy will help you find some energy to go. Plus they’ll always hold you accountable for making it to the gym.
2. Set realistic goals
My goal is to make it to the gym at the least three times a week. That’s only half of the week, and it doesn’t take up a lot of my time. So when setting goals think small. Maybe you decide to go to the gym five days a week and just do twenty minutes of cardio, or maybe you decide to attend two group fitness classes a week. The smaller the goal the easier the achievement and you can set more goals.
3. Attend at least one group class
By attending a Pilates or yoga class, you learn different techniques and what parts of your body you need to strengthen. Plus classes are all about having fun or relaxing. If you find that the class is not fun or relaxing then it’s not the class for you. I attended yogalites and found that it wasn’t for me. Then I attended a barre class and I loved it! It was fun, challenging and I learned a lot.
4. You don't need any fancy drinks or supplements
These aren’t as important as actually getting to the gym. If you decide to take them, then go to the gym too. You’ll see better results combining the two.
5. Reward yourself
The way I get myself to go to the gym us the promise of unhealthy food after. If I go to the gym, then I allow myself to eat anything I want. If I don’t go, I make myself be more conscious of what I’m eating. If food isn’t a motivator for you, try rewarding yourself with clothes or a fun night out.
6. HAVE FUN!
Have fun with what you’re doing. Don’t compare yourself to others in the gym or be self conscious of what you’re doing. Everyone who is in the gym is there to better themselves so it is not a place for judgment. And honestly, no one is paying attention to you. Working out should be a fun, stress relieving activity. If you’re not having fun, change what machines you’re doing, you’re routine or the classes you’re attending.
I am a super lazy person. I hate the gym. I would much rather be in the bed reading and watching Netflix. By using this guide, I find myself at the gym and enjoying myself. I love how I feel about myself and I’m looking healthier. By not pushing yourself too much you’re making it easier on yourself and achieving goals more quickly than you thought. You’ll feel better and relieve some stress that college and life can cause.
