Sometimes we find ourselves so busy that we don't have time to eat. Or sleep. Or breathe. Living, in general, becomes a big burden because it just doesn't squeeze into that to-do list of daily errands, assignments, clubs and organizations on campus, socializing, and more. But sometimes, we find that the day just aligns itself to provide a perfect time to sit in bed and just sleep the day away. We're able to doze off, watch that Netflix documentary we've been wanting to see, and find ourselves wondering "Wait, is it still raining?" because, you know, you haven't looked out the window or gone outside in, well, hours.
As lazy as this sounds, I think everyone needs those once in a while. We are constantly doing something. Doing homework, running errands, attending meetings, trying to keep up with friends and family, going to sports practice -- the list of responsibilities goes on and on! Going out with friends for a fun night on the town is definitely a way to reward ourselves, but sometimes that day spent in sweatpants and a baggy t-shirt is exactly what we need. We need those hours of extra sleep, or the time curled up in bed finding new music to listen to.
So then there's the question: why don't we partake in this rest and relaxation time more often? What's wrong with napping, and taking some alone time to recuperate from a long week of school or work?
It could be a number of things. Pressure to do more, or be more. Or maybe it's just that our generation is constantly moving. We are constantly looking at other people's lives through that of a phone screen. It was not designed to be a bad thing. Social media was meant to connect people, make relationships closer and stronger. And a lot of times, it does.
I love the pictures of my baby cousins playing house, or reading about family that are several states away. But sometimes the social media can infuse jealousy, and the infamous FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out). Maybe we subconsciously always feel the need to be doing something when everyone else is out adventuring, or exploring, or laughing with friends, and so, missing out on those things is scary.
So, I have a proposal for people my age, or anyone really: take advantage of that alone time. Take time to read that book you've heard about. Take the time to catch up on sleep. We shouldn't always worry that we're missing out, and focus on ourselves and what we need. And sometimes, we need sweatpants and ice-cream. Okay, maybe that's all the time. But take it! Take the time off, close your eyes, and snuggle up. Cheers to relaxing! Enjoy it.
