This past Wednesday, the legend Kobe Bryant retired after 20 years of blood, sweet, and basketball.
Before we dive deeper into the article, I will say that I am a Boston Celtic and Miami Heat fan. I have plenty of reasons to not like Kobe, and in fact I do not like Kobe. However it would be criminal for me to not give him admiration and respect as one of the greatest basketball players of all-time. If my opinion is not enough, he has many notable awards and statistics to back it up.
A five time NBA champion, with two NBA finals MVPs. Kobe has only one ring shy of another legend, Michael Jordan. There are very few who can be mentioned in the same sentence as Michael Jordan. Kobe is one of those individuals who can stand on the same stage with Jordan and not get demolished. Aside from average over 25 points, 4 assist, and 4 rebounds per game Kobe has shown a competitive nature unmatched by no other throughout his career. Kobe was the superstar I hated as a natural Celtic and Heat fan, but loved to watch.
My father is a huge Lakers fan. We would have our daily trash talk about each other teams and Kobe was always somewhere in the discussion. My favorite phrase would be that “Kobe sucks!” The reason I would say that is because Kobe made the game winning shot last night against my team.
Watching Kobe compete was a critical moment in bonding with my father. Through my hate for Kobe and my father’s love for Kobe we grew closer. Some of my best childhood memories were waiting for my dad to come home around midnight from work. After he would take a shower, we would watch the late night Lakers came and talk trash to each other until the end.
The Lakers and the NBA will undoubtedly never be the same without Kobe. A truly amazing warrior and competitor that will always be remembered for some of the NBA’s most amazing moments. Some of Kobe’s notable moments are, but not limited too; entering the NBA in 1996 as the young NBA player ever, scoring the 2nd most points in a game with 82, and scoring 60 points in his last game this past Wednesday. A scoring machine should be tattooed somewhere on him. Kobe has brought all basketball fans joy and exited in style.
