Ah, sophomore year. The year you think you have mostly everything figured out, or not, the year before you are required to declare a major, and the year before half of your college career has been completed. Some people even refer to sophomore year as the sophomore slump. You're not technically a college upperclassman yet, but you're not a freshman anymore either. At this point you've mastered the ins and outs of your university. But here are some things that most college sophomore can relate to:
1. You question every one of your life decisions.
Sometimes it's the big things like if the major you've chosen is the right one for you. Or if you're undecided, if you'll ever discover a major you'll love. And other times it's the little things like, order a calzone or go out tonight??
2. You are either stuck on campus and can't wait to live off campus or are lucky enough to have already escaped.
Living on campus may seem like fun freshman year because everyone is in such close proximity, but once you hit sophomore status living off campus is a dream. You can't wait to have your own space, own room, and more privacy.
3. You question why there are so many people on campus you don't recognize and then realize they're just freshman.
I swear, every time I come back to school from break there are more and more people that I guarantee did not go here before. Chances are they're probably just freshman.
4. Age 21: So close but so far away.
Being 19 or 20 years old is almost a curse. Although, there are a lucky few who happen to turn 21 before the year is over.
5. The sophomore slums weren't as bad as you thought as a freshman.
As a freshman, looking at sophomore housing might have made you cringe. But after living in one for over a semester, you realize they are not nearly as bad as you thought and it's much better than using the freshman communal bathrooms *shudder*.
6. You start to realize that adulthood is quickly approaching.
Suddenly it hits you, you're going to be graduating into the real world in two years. And unless you're going to graduate school, you're going to have to find a way to make some money asap.
7. You may start to go to bed earlier on weekdays.
It's not like freshman year anymore where you might be able to get away with going out any night of the week.
8. The workload is real.
Classes are harder and it seems like there's something everyday, a quiz, and paper due, a test, and it all starts to catch up with you.
9. You are constantly searching for internships.
You have to spice up that resume with an internship here, an internship there. The struggle is finding one that also pays but no matter what it still looks good.
10. Sometimes you miss home but deep down you know you love your school friends immensely.
Sometimes if you're home for an extended period of time, you start to go through college withdrawals and miss your school friends.
All in all, sophomore year isn't too bad. Embrace it with positivity and live in the moment or else college will pass you by.
