On October 4th at 10:17 p.m., 32-year-old hip hop rapper Kid Cudi revealed his depression and anxiety in an emotional Facebook post stating that he has checked himself into rehab. He explains how he struggles to leave the house every day. He also goes on to explain how he finds it difficult to trust anyone as a result of his anxiety, but he is ready to step on the path to get better.
While Cudi goes on to state how “ashamed” he feels because of his feeling this way, he tells us he must take care of himself, his family, his daughter, and his fans. No one should feel ashamed for feeling this way. Mental disorders are a disease; those which no one can control.
An estimated 26.2% of Americans ages 18 and older suffer from diagnosable mental disorder in a year. This comes out to be around 57.7 million people, and these people are only those who went to get help. There are more people out there who are so ashamed like Cudi, who are never brave enough to get help.
While he continues to explain how he does not feel like a leader or a hero for being a victim of this terrible disease, he fails to realize just how much he influenced other people. Many people never get help, and before they even realize, it is too late. Scott Mescudi is very strong for admitting to himself and others that he needed to better himself.
As a very successful singer, songwriter, record producer, guitarist, music video director, and film composer, he is an influence on suffering fans. If a famous rapper can check himself into a rehab for help, so can other suffering people. He is brave for this, and being so talented, Scott deserves to ‘feel at peace’.
Although this terrible disease is growing, I hope that Kid Cudi’s bravery influenced others to get the help they need. No one deserves to feel as if they are ‘swimming in a pool of emotions every day of their life’ and no one should feel ashamed to get help.
