If there's one thing we all could use, it's confidence in ourselves, our work, our ability and in one another. Inspired by DJ Khaled's Keys to Success, here are some major keys to developing killer confidence.
1. Make Eye Contact
This sounds simple, but it’s surprising how many people don’t make eye contact while speaking. Eye contact is a powerful form of non-verbal communication, which can make someone seem more trustworthy, powerful and confident in conversation.
2. Accept Compliments
Stop deflecting compliments that people give you. It unfortunate when someone goes out of their way to say something nice, but gets shut down by negative rebuttal from the person they were complimenting. Instead, graciously accept and thank others when they say good things about you.
3. Practice Good Posture
Poor posture radiates insecurity. Richard Petty, a professor of psychology at Ohio State, says that in addition to giving a good impression, having good posture makes individuals more confident in themselves. “It turns out that our posture can also affect how we think about ourselves,” says Petty. “If you sit up straight, you end up convincing yourself by the posture you’re in.” An added bonus is that having good posture can make you appear taller and slimmer!
4. Say Something Positive About Yourself Every day.
Have one to three positive affirmations that you can say about yourself each day. The things you think about over and over again shape your reality. By having positive self-talk on a regular basis, your confidence will grow.
5. Look Sharp
This point is exemplified by one simple phrase: “dress for success.” Psychologists agree that how you dress relates to how you feel. Dressing well not only gives a positive impression about you to others, but it also gives you a positive impression of yourself.
6. Clean Up Your Space
Similar to dressing well, cleaning up your living space makes a big difference. When you have a clean, livable workplace and home, it gives you something to feel good about. To be honest, it can make you feel like a bad ass to have an organized space in a world of college chaos.
7. Pick Good Company
Choose your friends wisely. Surrounding yourself with positive, engaging and supportive people makes a world of difference. Be with people who make you feel valued and secure about who you are. Life is too short to be friends with "Debbie Downers."
8. Stay True To You
Stay true to your own values, thoughts and personality. A big part of being confident is sticking to your gut even when it’s not popular or approved by others. Be a maverick, a person who isn’t afraid to be a free thinker.
9. Don’t Be A Victim
Do not let other people’s negativity destroy your confidence. This one is tough. But, at the end of the day, haters are going to hate. So you can choose to either ignore it, or if it becomes consistently irritating, cut that toxic energy. or person, out of your life.
10. Fake It Until You Make It
Even when it seems like there is no hope, act as if there is. By faking it until you make it, you'll surprise yourself by what you can actually accomplish. And, in turn, it boosts your confidence about your abilities.
11. Eliminate "Can’t" From Your Vocabulary
By cutting out this one word, you will be amazed at all of the things you can do.
12. Bless Up
Be grateful and appreciative of the things you do have. When you have an attitude of gratitude, more good things come your way.
