The times have changed since when our parents were young. Laws have been passed, some of our favorite snack recipes have been altered, and our personal needs are not the same as theirs once were. Between dietary restrictions and mental health conditions, 2017 differs greatly from 1977.
One thing that remains the same, which is highly controversial, is that some school districts do not have the proper funding to install proper heating and cooling units in all of their buildings. Apparently, since it was unavailable before means it's not a necessity now. I understand where these people are coming from but I do not agree with their opinion.
I suffer from low blood pressure and tend to get overheated very easily. A lot of my teachers were accommodating, however, not all of them were. During my freshman year of high school, my science teacher refused to let me drink water in the lab, even when I had gym class right before. Hell, even now that I am concluding my first year at Susquehanna, I feel myself having déjà vu.
Right now, as I am sitting down writing this article, I feel like I am going to wipe out because this campus is so hot. We, fortunately, have air conditioning, it just has yet to be turned on. Once the temperature outside hits near 80, they should come on automatically. Although it is nice outside, some people, myself included, have allergies that disallow them to sit in their rooms with the windows open.
To anyone thinking this is nothing to worry about and that your money should be spent towards other things, please remember that there are children with asthma and other respiratory/health issues. At times the temperature inside of the classrooms gets so high it's harder to stay awake. Our children deserve to get the most out of their education even if it means they won't have the same experience as their predecessors. We won't have the same experiences to begin with because history is always changing every day and new lessons are learned at any given moment. Change is good, let's embrace it together.
