What is sisterhood? Sometimes it’s listening to every sad story while you try to catch every tear. Sometimes it’s complimenting her slightly off key singing, because seeing her smile light up the car with the windows down makes even the moon envious. Most of the time it’s smiles and laughter, even when they’re fake, to capture the perfect picture, but without a doubt, every single day, sisterhood is an unbreakable bond that ties women together. Along the way you pick up great stories and fabulous bridesmaids, but the memories that tie us together are what really counts at the end of the day.
We love each other in a way that other people just can’t understand. We love our letters stitched on to a crisp v-neck t-shirt, but we love what those letters represent, even more. We spend weeks recruiting the absolute best women to join us in our struggle to get through life, but together we make it a loving and joyous struggle. Challenge molds us into stronger, more beautiful people. One of the things women do best, I think, is friendship. We love more empathetically, we fight like cats and dogs, but when push comes to shove, we would take a bullet for our girls. International Women's Friendship month was established by Kappa Delta Sorority to perpetuate and celebrate those friendships that blossom into sisterhoods and change lives. There's something about women that intensifies our relationships and in 1999 Kappa Delta set out to devote a time, every year, to celebrating those friendships that change our lives. As a sorority we love to celebrate our sisterhood but this month is about more than that. It's about the bonds we carry with us every day, with our mothers and sisters and best friends. It's about being proud to be a woman and about lifting each other up. Sisters tell you that it’s okay when you lose. They try to pick you up when you fall, but on those days that they just can’t hold your world together, they’ll lay with you until you can get up again.
I can say with absolute certainty that the most influential people in my life have been women, both older and younger than me. I've learned that family doesn't mean blood, but means dedication to the good and the bad. Sisterhood in a journey to something better and hopefully you find the inspiration to be a better woman along the way.
Join us and Kappa Delta's everywhere in celebrating the women in your life that are just honestly really awesome. Call your mom and tell her you appreciate how she used to cut the crust off your sandwiches, or ask that Starbucks barista how her day is going. Friendships are about the small things, the smiles lost in a crowd and the sticky notes of encouragement left on bathroom mirrors. Celebrations can happen every day, especially when there are so many beautiful women to celebrate. So often the moments of true friendship are masked and forgotten and lost, but just as often it seems we see something in ourselves that pushes us to strive for better. Strive for better this September and celebrate those women you lift you to greatness.
