As the beginning of the Detroit Red Wings season approached, I was thinking about how many times I saw my favorite sport in action and home team play in Joe Louis Arena. Come the 2017-18 season, the Red Wings will no longer call Joe Louis home because they are moving to a brand new arena. Joe Louis is more than just a hockey arena to devoted life long fans like myself, so here are the top three things I am going to miss the most about the Joe.
1. The Original Name
In the NHL, currently the only teams to not have their arena named after a brand name sponsor are the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden and the Detroit Red Wings at Joe Louis Arena. The new home arena of the Red Wings was announced with the name Little Caesars Arena, and I am not the only disappointed fan. If only we could've honored Mr. Hockey by calling it Gordie Howe Arena.
2. The Devoted Fans
Although the Red Wings will keep their fans, there will never be a repeat of the famous JLA fans. From our favorite Orange Hat Guy who was at every game, and when he passed had a seat painted orange in his honor, to Mo Cheese the crazy dancing WingNut. Times like these will be remembered, but will sadly be left at the Joe.
3. The Sing- Alongs
Yes, there will still be the oldies, throwbacks and fan favorite songs, but there's nothing quite like a sold out night at the Joe. There was always something about singing Journey's "born and raised in SOUTH DETROIT" with 20,500 of your closest fellow hockey fans. It still gives me chills every time.
Although I will always think of Joe Louis Arena when "Don't Stop Believin' " comes to mind, new memories will be created come the 2017-18 season at Little Caesars Arena. For now, let us crazy hockey fans cheer on the Detroit Red Wings during the Farewell Season At The Joe!
