During the Presidential debates, the question of a peaceful transition of power was raised in regards to the period in between the election and the inauguration next January. The nature of this dialogue was to determine whether the Presidential candidates would agree to concede the Presidential race if they lost. Trump refused to give a definite answer to this question, which made him a target of criticism from Hillary Clinton and others in the media. People criticized Trump’s apparent pettiness in refusing to accept defeat. Clinton criticized him, saying that by refusing to accept defeat, he would be endangering democracy.
Well, so much for that! Green Party candidate Jill Stein has demanded a vote recount in three swing states- Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania- which happen to be the three swing states that ultimately gave Trump the Presidency. She has stated that she does not believe that the recount will change the outcome of the election; but is rather a check and balance on the election process, which does seem strange given the absence of recount request in any of the states that Hillary carried. The Clinton campaign recently came out in support of the recount. Stein has stated that the recount is not being done to benefit either candidate at the expense of the other, although she has yet to demand a recount in any of the swing states that Clinton won.
Jill Stein has raised 5 million dollars so far, which is enough to cover recounts in Wisconsin and Pennsylvania. The fund raising goal is 7 million, which would be enough to cover recounts in all three states. Wisconsin has announced that it will indeed proceed with a vote recount.
