I have a "different" name. It's not common, it's not white. I've learned to say "here" when a teacher pauses when taking attendance. I've never minded. But, now, I've fallen in love with my name. It's different and I draw upon the strength within its meaning. Here's a small poem I wrote about it. I encourage you all to think deeply about your name and what it means to you.
Alleyah
means the most high or exalted one in Hebrew. In Arabic, it means a guide of others.
I am the daughter of Deborah and Hazrat,
And the sister of Omar.
My family gave me many lessons.
My mom taught me to be kind and lead in all that I do. My dad taught me to be strong and stay focused.
My brother taught me to stay positive.
I am passionate, positive, and flawed.
And someday, I will make a positive impact on the world.
My name is Alleyah Katherine Ally.
