It's Okay To Not Have It All Figured Out

Change your mind, and life will change accordingly.

It's Okay To Not Have It All Figured Out
Abbie Paquette

When we were young, we always had these crazy aspirations to be a different profession when we grew up, which seemed to change with the week. One day I'd want to be an astronaut, another I'd want to be a ballerina, and so on. But as we got older, it seems our large field of possibilities slowly diminished into a very narrow valley. As kids, we thought that we could do anything in the world, but now as reality sets in, we fixate on one thing and one thing only: go to college and get a well-paying job.

Well, I'm here to tell you life isn't always as crystal clear as you want to be. You may think that you've found your dream college to go to, only to figure out a couple months later that you can't stand the small community and are having not nearly as much fun as you thought. You may find that being a doctor isn't something you are actually interested in, but being a journalist seems to light up your world. You may think you have found the love of your life, only to realize the only connection you had was your love of tacos. What I'm trying to get across is that you don't have to have everything all figured out, and changing your mind is probably the best and hardest thing to do in life.

It's okay to be unsure of a career you want to end up as, rather than going into a field for the money. It's fine if you reject that boy or girl for going out on a second date if you're not emotionally ready. We as humans tend to fixate on the present, thinking that the only way for us to survive is this clear-cut way implanted in our heads.

But life has a very different plan for us indeed. You may not figure it all out in one go, it may take many tries and many failures to finally end up where you think you belong. Life is ever-changing, so our plans must be also.

Planning out every intricate detail of our lives is utterly useless as time goes on, and more obstacles occur in our lives. Those intricate details set out a few months in advance might mean nothing when the time actually comes. We try to overthink and over plan our lives in order to live the most fulfilled life as possible, yet think it only comes from one path. Yes, time is ever-fleeting, but relax. You always have enough time to change your mind and figure out what really gets your mind, body and soul to feel the adrenaline pumping through your veins, and to find a reason to wake up every morning.

That time where you figure it all out may be tomorrow, next month, or in a couple years, and we can never know for sure because of time. We seem to rush around to save time for our lives, but why not just say to hell with time and living for the moment? There is no sense in trying to plan life in intricate details or to force something to happen. It will not increase your life's value, and may not increase your happiness either. It will just make you be something you are not, rather than letting yourself find what you really need and want to be.

As humans and creatures of habit, it is okay to break out of your plan. Break the habit and leave your previous thoughts behind, and live for yourself. Even though time is going constantly and we all eventually end up in the same place, it doesn't mean you have to live the way you once thought about. Even if you have to transfer or break up with them, or change your major or whatever it is you want to fix in your life, do it for the sake of yourself. It is okay to change your mind for a different plan, life will change accordingly.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
