If you're a girl, it's inevitable that at one point in your life you have thought about who you were going to marry and how perfect it was going to be. Some girls even go into length about the qualities of their husband, the perfect wedding dress, the theme and decoration of the wedding, and the names of their future children. However, as you get older you realize that you slowly begin to have other priorities and finding your perfect match isn't the same as it was in all the Disney movies you watched as a child. You slowly find out that there are qualities about yourself that aren't perfect and expecting to find your perfect prince charming is going to take some time and patience.
We are now living in a world where medical and technical advances are occurring rapidly. So if most of us are living to be 100, why settle for an unhappy relationship? However, I am not saying that you need to wait for this magic man that checks off your list, but you don't need to settle for somebody just because you feel like that's what you have to do because everybody else is doing it. I will be completely honest and say that sometimes it sucks not having a close intimate relationship with somebody, but I'd rather be happy with myself then unhappy with another person.
Another factor that I believe influences 20 year-olds wanting to wait is the fact that we are not 100 percent sure what we want with our own lives right now. There are so many youths that have no idea what to do with their future because we've learned how to be good at several things, but a master of none. So when it comes to picking a school, a major, a career, or who we are going to spend forever with, we tend to be a little hesitant. Am I really making the right decision? Will I still like this career or my husband 20 years from now? How can I just pick one when there are a million different to pick from on different social medias and dating sites? Which leads me to my next point of developing ourselves and what we truly want.
We are now living in a society where media is rampant and what everybody construes to be correct is what we are supposed to believe. There are a million posts about how your girlfriend/boyfriend/fiancee/spouse are supposed to behave. However, every relationship is different so each couple will react differently to different things. Furthermore, it is now much easier for all your close friends and family to be a lot more meddlesome in your relationship. For most people nowadays a relationship isn't real until it is "Facebook official". Then you have to deal with your family looking your significant other up on all of their social media which may not always portray them in a good light or having to deal with their old exes finding you and harassing you. Social media can be a great benefit to some relationships, but to some it can be a huge hindrance.
I'd like to conclude by saying that I'm not telling people that they shouldn't be getting married during this time because marriage is beautiful and full of happiness, but more I am giving encouragement to those people that are depressed because they haven't found that special one yet. It's okay to wait and learn to love yourself and the world around you. One day you will be happy that you were patient and you will be able to love yourself and your spouse more fully.
