Entering a new chapter in life, I am learning that things have changed. I have changed, the people around me have changed, and my environment has changed. The way that things are now are not the way they were before and it’s bittersweet. Although growing and moving on in life when you don’t want to is rough, sometimes it is better to start new than it is to keep going back to the old. The past is the past for a reason, and sometimes it is best to stay there. Life goes on, and you should to. If you keep going back to the old, how can anything new grow?
Starting new doesn’t mean you have to forget, it just means you are ready to move on. If you stay in the same place, with the same people, and keep doing the same things, you aren’t giving yourself the opportunity to grow. There is more to life than routine. The world is too big, and life is too short to be surrounded by things that make you unhappy, and are repetitive.
Looking back at where I was last year compared to now, I wouldn’t have had it any other way. I have lived through a sh*tty friend, a sh*tty boyfriend, and sh*tty grades. I ended the chapter of my freshman year on a negative note, but instead of recycling the same people and same problems over again, I decided to move on. I opened the door, and you wouldn’t believe what was on the other side. All of a sudden, I was happy. Slowly but surely I forgot about the couple people that wronged me over the past few months, and created new relationships. I became unapologetically myself in every way, shape and form. I felt free and happy; for the first time in a long time. The days I spent missing the people that didn’t miss me turned into days where I reminisced with a couple fond memories for a couple minutes, and then made some new ones. If I was never able to open that door, I would never have been able to evolve the way I have.
To create good from the bad is not easy, and to open a new door that you don’t think is ready to be unlocked is tough, but it is a lot better than not trying at all. There’s only so many times you can keep up with the stagnant lifestyle that was created, but it is important to know that it doesn’t have to be that way. Don’t be afraid to do what it takes to get to that next step. Unlocking that door to the next chapter of your life isn’t easy, but what is on the other side could, and is most likely better than what you have in front of you at the moment.
