New (School) Year, New Me

It's my turn.

New (School) Year, New Me

I think your freshman year of college is a trial run to see how you do on your own. It's actually a really big step. One day you're in your house having everything paid for by your parents and the next your in a dorm, sleeping next to someone you met just the day before learning how to do everything on your own. Of course you're going to make mistakes, you're going to get lost at least once or twice and it's up to you to find your own way back on your path.

And that's what happened to me. I got lost and it took me awhile and a lot of energy to find my way back. I lacked confidence, I was giving up, I hated myself and everything around me. I got lost. But that's okay. Because this year, I'm going in with a different perspective. It's a new school year, and it's going to be a new me. This is my year.

1. More confidence.

I'm awesome. I'm funny. I'm good looking. I'm smart. I'm capable of anything. No, I'm not conceited, these are just things I've always doubted about myself and truth be told, it's time for that to be changed. I have to love myself before anything. I have to believe in everything I just said. And with this new year, I'm going to do that. Love yourself, you are worth it and you deserve some recognition.

2. Step out of that comfort zone.

I say this to everyone, "Be bold and try new things!" But I never take my own advice. Want to wear something different that you've never worn before? WEAR IT. Own it. Want to try new foods? Try a new Starbucks drink? Do it. It could be your favorite thing and you wouldn't even have noticed it unless you tried it. Think that person sitting next to you is cute? Talk to them. Make the first move. JUST DO SOMETHING WITH YOUR LIFE AND BE BOLD. BE DARING.

3. Try a new style.

This is the time to experiment. Want to do a crazy hairstyle? Do it. If it doesn't work, you can always go back and change it. Want to try a new sense of clothing? Buy it, you can rock anything. Want to get more into makeup? Do it! It's a fun challenge for yourself. Want to try the all natural look? DO IT. You're beautiful no matter what. (Something I need to start telling myself more and if you don't, then you should too.)

4. Kick ass in literally everything.

Like I said, it's a new school year and it's a new me. If I want to do it, then I'll do it. I'm redefining my image. I want to be the girl that people know she's confident, she knows what she wants to do with her life. Basically, just kick ass.

I've been saying this for the past week as I start packing to return to school, something I'm extremely excited for. I'm constantly telling myself those little reminders and to actually try and be happy this year, to not let the little things get to me. Because that's what happened last year, I let every little thing get to me and it almost destroyed me. But not this year. This year, I'm going in with a new mind set, something that nobody can take from me because I'm awesome. It's just now my time to believe it and take myself serious. And once I do, I'll continue to kick ass.

So... what are your goals for the incoming school year?

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
