When you decide to go through recruitment, it is a wonderful and exciting decision. However, there are many negative stereotypes associated with Greek life, such as being rich or spoiled, excessive partying and underage drinking. While some of these people may exist in Greek life, this is not the reason to join a sorority.
Sisterhood
I know everyone has heard "it's not four years, it's for life" in regards to the friendships you make within a sorority. This phrase has been uttered so much, it has almost become cliche and lost its meaning, except not to those who have experienced these friendships because they know how true this little quote to be. You will probably not become friends with everyone in your sorority, but you will find some girls that you really click with. It may seem scary at first, but there is a reason that you ended up in the sorority that you did and usually, it's because your values matched up and you will be an excellent addition to the chapter. It's not a lie to say that you will meet some of your best friends in your sorority. Those friends that you make will also push you to be the best version of yourself and will help you through your shortcomings if you do not succeed in that goal.
Philanthropy
Being in a sorority means you will have so many different opportunities to get involved with a variety of community service projects. Whether you are hosting a food event to raise money for your local philanthropic organization or attending another chapter's event, you can always find a way to help out. Most sororities/fraternities not only raise money for their local or national philanthropic organizations, but they are also very involved in local community service. There is not a way to be in a sorority and avoid philanthropy, whether it is something that you are very passionate about community service or not. You will find a love for philanthropy, not because you are forced to, but you get to see it first hand and it is such a beautiful experience.
Leadership/Involvement
There are several opportunities to achieve leadership while being involved in the Greek system. You can become an officer in your chapter, be a committee head, and attend leadership conferences. These are times that will give you skills that will last you a lifetime. Along with gaining leadership is the opportunity to get involved with many different organizations on campus. When you join a sorority, you will meet so many new people and have the opportunity, and perhaps a small push, to join many different organizations and really get involved on campus. This will give you a more well-rounded college education and the chance to meet many more wonderful people.
There are infinitely more reasons behind why joining a sorority is more than what it seems like on the outside, but I hope the couple that I shared have changed your mind about the typical sorority girl walking around campus with her letters and perfectly done hair and makeup. I've realized that being involved with Greek life is such a blessing and that it pushes you to be the best you can possibly be.
