It's In My Size, So It's Made For Me!

Why you shouldn't care about what others think of your clothing choice as a plus-sized woman.

"That isn't made for girls your size." As a plus-sized girl, I've heard this phrase way more than I'd ever care to. Being indirectly shamed about your size from someone you care about deeply can be more painful than a knife going straight to your heart.

When you think of a bikini or a crop top, the first image you see is a smaller-framed girl in these clothes. Why? Society has engraved in our brains that only certain-sized women should wear certain clothing types. They have led people to believe that fat is okay to have on a woman's chest and backside, but not on their stomach or thighs. This shouldn't be the case at all. This summer, a family member got pretty upset at me for wearing a bikini. I'm not small by any means, but I was still super confident. She told me "Only skinny girls can wear bikinis!"

Here's the deal...my bikini was a size XXL. I don't think a 120-pound woman could fit an XXL in a bikini or any other clothes for that matter. There are so many companies that make "skinny girl clothes" in plus sizes nowadays. I have been in several stores in the past few weeks that have started putting out plus-sized clothing collections. Torrid and Forever 21 happen to have some amazing plus-sized crop tops! What does that tell us? Maybe us bigger girls deserve a chance at looking cute, too! Why should we have to cover up and be ashamed of ourselves? Why should I, or any other woman, have to sit around hating ourselves every day just because other people don't like the way our bodies look? Answer: We don't. Your identity doesn't come from the size of your breasts, stomach or any other place on your body. It comes from within your heart and soul.

Here is my advice to all the women out there struggling with the same situation I am: Remember that phrase "If the shoe fits, wear it?" Take it literally. If you see a crop top in a size that fits you, flaunt it! Show off that tummy! You see a pair of shorts in your size?Wear them and show off those thick thighs! Don't let anyone but yourself be the judge of you! Live your life for yourself and not for others!

Remember: if it's made in your size, girl, it's made for you, too!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
