I debated whether or not I would even write this particular piece because I thought Donald Trump has enough attention from the press as it is. Yet, it occurred to me that reading through comment sections and Facebook posts I found a common thread with people: they do not take him seriously.
I think it is a mistake not to take him seriously. Okay, maybe the man himself is somewhat of joke but not the people who are voting for him. He embodies everything that particular political group aspires in a world leader (which seems to be misogynism, racism, and prejudice towards the lower class) and it is absolutely frightening. After all, he is leading in the primary polls for the Republican side.
"When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re sending people that have lots of problems. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists."
"Women have one of the great acts of all time. The smart ones act very feminine and needy, but inside they are real killers. The person who came up with the expression 'the weaker sex' was either very naive or had to be kidding. I have seen women manipulate men with just a twitch of their eye- or perhaps another body part."
"They're not coming to this country if I'm president. And if Obama has brought some to this country they are leaving, they're going, they're gone." (refugees and Muslims)
These three statements are only the beginning of this hateful rhetoric that has gained considerable amount of momentum with the conservative side of the political spectrum. Much justify his words as a mean of beings someone who "speaks their mind in times of political correctness." Much is left to be desired about America itself if a considerable of people are polling to vote for Donald Trump. America, who prides itself in the fact that it is a diverse country and a land of opportunity, is catering to the reckless rhetoric spewed by someone like Donald Trump.
Disregarding his rise in political gain is not only foolish but reckless. To dismiss him as another celebrity wannabe who wishes to prove himself be the next revolutionary thing in America and who wants to take it upon himself to "make America great again" is a fatal mistake a lot of people are making.
Now, to be completely frank with all of you, I have no idea how much of what Trump says is sensationalism in order to gain votes and how much he actually believes in. Sometimes I get the feeling he knows how polarized the political system is and simply chose a side and says all the things that political party wants to hear knowing he could lead.
Regardless of what his motivations might actually be, it is absolutely frightening to hear him say things that mirror so much of what Hitler said in his rise to power. Because whether his intentions are true or not, he caters to an entire group of people who do take what he says seriously.
Meanwhile, the media simply fuels his actions and words. I think we should all take into stock what is happening and start taking Trump seriously. The only people who get hurt are those his rhetoric is aimed at.
