I think we all can relate to the feeling of being a little down in the dumps about some aspect of our physical appearance. Whether it is the size of our waist, the color of our hair, the acne on our faces, or even our height (or lack there of). And while these feelings suck, it's super important to acknowledge how we are feeling. Coming from someone who has struggled her whole life with confidence, it is super important to remind yourself every day that you are fabulous no matter what the reflection in the mirror shows you. So here are a couple tips and tricks to boosting your body positivity.
1. Work Out In A FUN Way
This does not mean running two miles on a treadmill or planking for five minutes. Do something that you enjoy. You will be more convinced to get up and work out if you're doing something that you love. Take a dance class, do yoga in your backyard, or youtube five minute ab challenge videos and every night before bed have a routine. Exercise should be fun and enjoyable. Just remind yourself that the hardest part about working out is motivating yourself to begin. Once you start, you always are happy that you did.
2. Reward Yourself For Positive Thinking
I just started this and it seems to be working. Every time I thinking a positive thought about my appearance, I eat one skittle. I keep a bag of them in my purse and whenever I have a good thought about myself, I reward myself. While eating a whole bag of candy could make me feel worse, I get to still eat something sweet and have added more body positivity in my daily life. (Disclaimer: You can use any snack/candy to reward yourself...I just like skittles because they're small)
3. Eat Whatever And Whenever You Want
We have all tried to count calories and keep track of everything we are eating and while it is important to eat healthy and watch what you are putting in your body, it is okay to eat our every once in a while or splurge on some fried food. The more picky you are about watching the calories of food, the more crazy and obsessive you are going to get. I tried to calculate my daily calorie intake for the past two weeks and realized that I ended up feeling bad if I ate something too unhealthy, or didn't loose any weight.
4. Dance Around In A Mirror
Sometimes all you have to do is blast some music and dance around in the mirror in your underwear. There's no pressure because no one is watching and you can be yourself and pretend to be a rockstar. I don't really know the psychology behind this one, but it works.
5. Keep A Journal
Write down when you are feeling down, reflect on your day and then put it in the past. A journal is a great way to recognize how you are feeling and then forget about it.
6. Stop Following Those Fit Models on Social Media
Sure, we all claim we just follow them to be more motivated to get healthy. But really, these constant reminders are just making us feel worse about ourself. Follow an inspirational quote account, or a cute puppy dog account to bring a little happiness to your social media accounts.
7. Encourage And Motivate
Speak life in every encounter you have. I hear this quote at my youth group last week, it said "In every encounter we have the ability to give life or drain life." Encourage and motivate those around us. EVERYONE struggles with body positivity in some form. Compliment those around you and help bring everyone up. You will be surprised at how being kind can boost your own self image as well.
8. Buy Bathing Suits And Cute Sundresses AND Don't Care What People Say About You In Them
There is no rule that says someone above a certain weight cannot wear a bikini or a crop top. Wear what makes you feel comfortable. You only have one body, and it was created by an amazing God who loves you. Be proud of his creation.
9. Take Selfies
I know...it's funny, but when you take selfies and post one that you like it can help boost your confidence. Take hundreds of pictures of yourself because you love yourself!
