First was the Kylie Jenner Lip Challenge, where people everywhere participated in the “challenge” of making their lips swell up to mimic Kylie’s lips. Then came the Belly Button Challenge; people reached around their back to try and touch their belly button to prove they are thin enough to do so. Now, there is the Collarbone Challenge. People stack as many quarters as possible in their collarbone to, again, show how thin they are. All of these challenges have a few things in common: they are to be photographed and put on social media, they are completely pointless, and they are body shaming at it’s finest. There are so many reasons why this challenge, along with all other body shaming challenges, should no longer exist.
- Beauty goes WAY past weight. This is the most obvious and talked about reason. It is absolutely awesome for someone to be beautiful on the outside, but internal beauty is so important. People should be spending their time challenging each other to grow more in character, rather than challenging each other to stack quarters on themselves.
- Everyone’s perception of beauty is different. So many people have different perceptions of beautiful or skinny. Participating and believing in this challenge is simply conforming your perception of beauty to look like the rest of the worlds.
- No one needs to complete a challenge to be happy with his or her body. No matter what size a person is, they should be happy with themselves. If not, changing something about your body is fine; just don’t let body shaming challenges like this one make you unhappy. You are not defined by how many quarters fit in your collarbone, or if you can reach your belly button from behind your back.
- Fitness cannot be measured by quarters. Being healthy and fit is awesome and important, but how healthy and fit a person is cannot be measured by how many coins can be stacked on their body, especially if the goal is fit and not bony.
- It doesn’t make sense. There are plenty of thin people who cannot fit a bunch of quarters on their collarbone. There are also so many thin people who don’t have long enough arms to reach their belly button. What a crazy measurement.
- There are much better uses for that many quarters. Like paying tolls on the highway, parking at a meter, or buying a candy bar from a vending machine (my personal preference).
