Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past several months, you’ve probably heard that "Gilmore Girls" is getting a Netflix reboot. For die-hard fans like myself, this news is huge. The original series ended in 2007, leaving us wondering for the past nine years what our favorite Stars Hollow inhabitants are up to. One of the biggest arguments that surrounds the show is which “team” each viewer aligns with: Dean, Jess, or Logan. Rory Gilmore had her fair share of male suitors over the course of the series, but these three made the biggest mark. Now that the series is coming back and each of Rory’s exes is slated to return, avid Gilmore Girls watchers are opening old wounds about which man Rory should end up with this time around.
(Spoilers ahead for anyone that has yet to watch the amazing first six seasons, and less-than-stellar 7th season.)
Dean:
Dean was the perfect first boyfriend in my opinion. He was sweet, kind and sort of awkward, but he fit in with the Gilmores. I mean, he survived Willy Wonka night the first time he was at their house. That takes skill. Their first “break-up” was a typical he-said, she-said (he said he loved her, she said nothing…) and the moment their romance rekindled was probably the cutest thing ever. However… This is only in defense of Season 1 and 2 Dean. Come Season 5, I despise Dean. He drunkenly admits his feelings for Rory at his bachelor party, yet still gets married. He then cheats on his wife with Rory, and dates Rory again. It’s just uncomfortable. In essence, I like Dean in the beginning of the series, but not at the end. So he’s not in the running for me as one of Rory’s potential mates in the revival. Sorry, Dean.
Jess:
Ah, Jess Mariano. The stereotypical bad-boy. Jess arrives towards the end of Rory and Dean’s first relationship and causes quite a stir. Jess likes books and makes literary jokes with Rory. He’s a bad boy with a soft side, even looking out for Rory before they were dating. Eventually, they do date on the show (and in real life!) and all is great for awhile. Then, because Jess is Jess and marches to the beat of his own drum, he just leaves. He sits down on the bus next to Rory as she heads to school, and says nothing about leaving. He returns late the next season only to profess his love for Rory, and then vanishes again. He showed up again at Rory’s dorm at Yale begging her to come away with him… Jess has never been a constant in her life, only coming by when he needed to shake things up. He did have the power to call Rory out on her crap when she dropped out of school, but still. I’ll never forgive Jess for leaving without saying goodbye and continuously stirring up drama in Rory’s life, so he is also off the list. Sorry, Jess.
Logan:
And at last, we have Mr. Logan Huntzberger. Very rich, very attractive and very much the opposite of Rory. When they began dating, Rory insisted that she wanted to keep things “casual,” as she and Logan began dating very soon after she and Dean broke up the second time. But after awhile, Rory was sick of being “one of the many,” and instead of showing her the door, Logan decided to commit. He was willing to do what was necessary to keep Rory in his life, and that’s why I’m #TeamLogan. He may have had his "arrogant, inconsiderate, mindless, frat boy, low life, buttface miscreant" moments, but in the end, he was there for her. He challenged her in the best ways, and brought her out of her comfort zone. Rory also challenged Logan, and he grew up after being with her. He may have had some bad business deals, but eventually figured his life out again. I mean, for his early twenties, he was doing pretty well.
I know he left her with an ultimatum at the end of Season 7, but any true Gilmore Girls fan that doesn't really count because Amy Sherman Palladino (aka creator and writer for the first six seasons) was out of her contract and not writing for the show. In other words, we don't know where Rory and Logan should have ended up. I'm definitely hoping they end up married in the revival, since the terrible human that is Mitchum Huntzberger, along with Logan's Life and Death Brigade buddies will be back for for the fourth and final episode. I hear wedding bells!
So, here's to all of my fellow Gilmore Girls fans that are (im)patiently waiting for these episodes to air, and to me hopefully not being chased by pitchforks for declaring myself as #TeamLogan.
