There are a lot of laws that people simply do not agree with, and many controversial topics that get a conversation started. These include abortion policy, marriage within the LGBT community, animal testing, legalizing marijuana, and so on. However, one hot topic right now is immigration. As someone who does not put their identity in a political opinion or political view, I try to stray away from writing anything that "stirs the pot" a little bit. Sadly, this is one topic that I couldn't stay away from.
I saw a post on Facebook, of all places, that said:
"So parents who sneak across the border illegally with their minor children are upset that they are separated from their children after they are caught? Let me clue you in to something. Americans who commit illegal acts and are sent to prison are separated from their children, too. Don't want to be separated from your children? Obey the law."
Okay, now read that again. This post is comparing the choice to commit a crime to people who are coming to the country in order to find new opportunities and better their lives. One issue with political debates is that one person with an opinion can post whatever they want on Facebook, regardless if it's factual or not, and have several people agree with them.
The issue with this post is that they're complaining about the legalities without realizing the moralities. If you want to talk about legalities, the Holocaust was technically legal too- but was it right? Without the background knowledge of the situation, would you still agree that it's okay to rip children away from their parents? (Not including children taken away from abusive households or domestic violence). Of course not. You'd say that taking a child away from their parent is wrong. However, you can't fight the (wrong) immigration with the wrong of taking away a child from his or her family. Two wrongs have never made a right. Therefore, at the end of the day, this is not a policy problem, it's a people problem.
It's a people problem because for some reason there are people that believe that taking away children from families is an okay idea. It's a people problem because there are several people on Facebook who spread lies instead of truth, and opinions instead of information. This policy may take care of the legalities, but does not take care of the moralities.
Each one of us have a different moral compass, and this issue has made that clear.
Our God says "We love because he first loved us. Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen. And he has given us this command: Anyone who loves God must also love their brother and sister." - 1 John 4:19-21
Our brothers and sisters are being separated, and our world has forgotten how to love.
As much as I'd like to blame the policy, I think we really need a shift in the hearts of those who are making it.
