I grew up in a family of three girls. I have two younger sisters and my mom, so my dad was the only male influence in my life growing up. So naturally, I wasn't that involved in sports. I was on the swim team all throughout high school, I tried soccer a little bit, and when I was a kid I was really into gymnastics and dance. So I was athletic, I just wasn't really sporty. I went to all of the football and lacrosse games in high school, but it was really more for the social aspect than the sport. I loved when the games were themed and I got to dress up in my school colors and cheer for my team. I loved to follow along with the cheerleaders and pretend I could actually do the cheer they were doing even though I was horribly off. I loved the spirit of it all. I liked that everyone got together because they wanted a certain team to win. I just didn't understand the actual sports happening.
It's not like I hate the sport either. Whenever I tell someone I am not really that into sports, they give me this weird look and ask why, but it's not because I don't like the sports, it's just I don't understand anything about them. I understand soccer and swimming and occasionally lacrosse, but that's all I got. I don't understand the fact that people will sit and casually watch a game at their house without anyone around. I will not do that, I just don't understand how people do it. But, I will come to any and all sports games you invite me to. They are my favorite. I love the atmosphere, and I love when people are that spirited.
I recently went to a Columbus Crew game and had the best time of my life. I have never seen a Columbus Crew game before in my life, and I do not follow them by any means. My friends and I piled into my car (which comfortably holds five, we fit seven) and road tripped from Athens to Columbus. We had a mini road trip and jammed to all the CDs in my car and got to the stadium early enough to be able to go into the official store before kick off. We wandered around and I got a jersey and a couple of my friends got shirts and stickers. We watched kick-off and cheered as hard as the actual Columbus fans. Not by any means saying we were fake fans, but we just don't go as hard as the regular Columbus fans. We got dinner from the food trucks that they have at games, and it was the best time of my life. But, I'm probably not going to become a regular Columbus Crew fan or follow them on a day to day basis. I just like the atmosphere.
So call me a fake fan and tell me that I don't know what I'm talking about because odds are that you are probably right. I have no idea what I'm talking about when I cheer and scream touchdown and boo the other team. I do it anyway because I love sports. I love everything that comes with them. I love the atmosphere, I love the food, I love the jerseys, I love the people, I love the excitement. Sports are the greatest, I'm just not a sports fan.
