If You Want Us To Vote Give Us Something To Vote For

The struggle of being a first time voter in the 2016 Presidential Election

If You Want Us To Vote Give Us Something To Vote For

I am a freshman in college. I am fresh out of high school and I am faced with a ton of new responsibilities not only to myself but to my community and to society as well. Along with remembering to eat dinner and wash my clothes at least once a week, perhaps my most challenging new responsibility is the responsibility to vote. As not only a student but a young person in this day, age, and society I have been overwhelmed with reminders that my age group is the biggest voting block there is and its not only our right but its our duty to vote. While I respect my professors, parents, and any adult I see ever for constantly reminding me to use my voice, I have to wonder why their generation and possibly the preceding generation decided to drop the heaping pile of crap they call candidates at our feet and said "make that work."

Not only are these two of the worst presidential candidates in U.S History, this is the most disgusting election in U.S History. Unfortunately for us youngsters it just happens to be the first election we've ever had a say in. For the majority of people twenty five and under this is the the first and only way we've been able to get involved with our national government. Our generation is called spoiled, privileged, and ignorant and while I am aware that there are multiple videos and screenshots of murdered grammar on the internet that would prove those points to be true, I would ask older generations to take a look at the government they are leaving us before rushing to comment on how we're ruining the world.

There are just about a million negative things to say about this election. Between Hillary's emails and Trump's wall there seems to be no method and no end to the madness. However, the biggest problem with this election from a young, new voter's perspective is that I have yet to find a cause, from either candidate, that I can really get behind. I have heard more of Trump's idiocy than I have about Harambe, I've seen more t-shirts and bumperstickers calling Hillary a bitch than I care to think about. My question to the older gentleman sporting the "Trump that Bitch" wife beater with an eight ounce beer and the gut to match it is why does any of that matter? Why do your persistent, double-standard comments about presidential candidate Clinton matter? The same question applies to those who ridicule Mr. Trump. How does insulting him give future generations something to get behind and believe in? Watching a middle-aged man yell "Hillary for prison" not only gives me no hope for my future involvement in government, it actually infuriates me.

It is the generation that spawned these candidates that holds the responsibility of giving the next generation causes to fight for and candidates to not only admire, but to respect. It is September and I have yet to experience either of those qualities in this election. All I know is that there may be a wall. Not only have we been robbed of a decent election we have been taught how to behave like animals and sling mud at one another to gain points rather than reach a conclusion. I don't know who I am going to vote for come November, frankly I don't know what causes the candidates stand for, perhaps that makes me ignorant but it's a direct result of negative media coverage and adults acting like pre pubescent children. I pray that the 2020 Election brings mature candidates who can compromise and who fight for causes that young people can get behind and stand up for.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
