Dealing with Hurricane Dorian the best way we know how!
HURRICANE DORIAN
As some as you may know, living down south comes with the consequences of having to deal with hurricanes. The past 6 years that I have been living in South Carolina, a storm has come just about each year. With that being said, the debate of the severeness of the storm and if it is actually worth evacuating or not, always comes in to play. Some hurricanes have been worse than others but it definitely seems to have become a normal occurrence while living on the coast. Hurricanes have become so normalized that people have started to use the event of evacuating as an excuse for a mini vacation or as in what most people like to call it, a "Hurrication".
From past hurricane experiences, sitting around without electricity in hopes it will go back on any minute, isn't fun at all. Instead, go take advantage of the unexpected free time. In 2016, my family and I took the hurricane that year as an opportunity to go to Atlanta, Georgia for the first time and explore what the city had to offer. In 2017, we went to the mountains of North Carolina, stayed in a cabin and was able to hike the entire week we were there. Needless to say, it has always been a different adventure each year.
The mini "hurrications" can be a great break and all. However, for my fellow college students out there, you know that there is a love-hate relationship with hurricane season. We all just became familiar with our schedules, completed our first full week of being back in classes, and filled out our planners with every assignment due for the semester. Words of advise: just scratch all plans and go along with the chaos that comes along with this time of year. Try to not stress too hard about all of the assignments that will be due when returning from Hurricane Dorian. This isn't the south's first rodeo and won't be the last that we deal with.
